Article written by: SleepyC on Thu-11-05-09Ok guys, I'll be up early tomorrow and heading out the door to the 2009 JR Indoor Electric Festival.
Who is going?
Speak up! Lets make the FG presence known! Wear an FG shirt! Sport an FG logoes plane!
To re-cap:
November 6th - 8th you will find hundreds of foam addicted pilots throwing down at the 2009 JR indoor Electric Festival.
This is the 6th year for this show and the return from last years hiatus. A horrible wind storm decimated the golf dome last year just weeks before the show, at that time it was unknown if the dome would even be rebuilt. Well it was not only rebuilt, it was improved are it is ready to go for this year!

Article written by: SleepyC on Mon-11-02-09Unless you have been sleeping under a rock, you know that FG member Bob "Sensei" Sawyer loves BIG, no...I should say HUGE airplanes. As the designer/builder of the first HUGE aerobatic RC plane the 70% Staudacher S-300 Bob has been at this for a quite some time.
Lately Bob's focus has been on lightening airframes, and making them fly like giant foamies. We saw threads from Bob on a 40% Carden build that ended up as a sub 30 lb rocket. We saw a Hangar 9 35% Extra 260, re-construction which shaved several pounds off of it. Bob also started an 80% Extra 260 that he is still working on and hopefully will finish someday soon.
But right now, Bob has been focused on his latest project. A 55% Extra... ::Read More>>
Article written by: SleepyC on Sat-10-31-09Hey guys, I hope everyone has a Happy Halloween!
Enjoy the time Trick or Treating, or relaxing!
A little Halloween history.....
As European immigrants came to America, they brought their varied Halloween customs with them. Because of the rigid Protestant belief systems that characterized early New England, celebration of Halloween in colonial times was extremely limited there.
It was much more common in Maryland and the southern colonies. As the beliefs and customs of different European ethnic groups, as well as the American Indians, meshed, a distinctly American version of Halloween began to emerge. The first celebrations included "play parties," public events held to celebrate the harvest,... ::Read More>>

From the first show in Rockford IL, to the last in Atlanta, Ga the Huckfest series upheld it's title of being the most Extreme Bad Ass 3D fly-in series in the world!
I'm so happy to say that at all five Huckfests the level of respect for safety and the event grounds was very high while at the same time the flying was low and dirty! Once again the Huckfest series went off with out a single glitch! Thanks guys!
Now, as everyone knows JTEC/RADIOWAVE was the title sponsor of the 2009 Huckfest series. Well what does that mean? That means that they made it possible for FG to travel to all the shows to provide the coverage,... ::Read More>>

ANYWAY... the 2009 Tucson Aerobatic Shootout is in the books. And man what a contest. The competitors took it all to another level again this year as did the event organizers. Article written by: SleepyC on Sat-10-10-09The first cuts have been made, and we are entering the heart of the contest here at the 2009 Tucson Aerobatic Shootout! The pilots are really starting to feel the pressure, and any simple mistake can cost a pilot the show.
The trick is to remain calm, cool and collected. Not a problem with thousands of dollars of prizes at stake and hundreds of people watching.
Can Mark Leseberg pull the "Hat trick + 2", or will Jason Noll dig deep and pull it off? Could Chris Brislin show all of the pilots how the Aussies do it, or could it be that Gernot or Andrew will bring the hurt?
We will watch it all unfold and report back here!

It's not too big, probably 35 pilots, but every pilot is invited and is already a friend.
The grounds are wonderful and Doc's hospitality is top notch.

“A 40 inch Ultimate Bipe?” came the reply.
That answer stirred up some mixed emotions inside me… I was not a huge Bipe fan.

The field is in amazing condition, the corn is high and is the best plane catcher you have ever seen. Dead stick out far with no hope of bringing the plane back?! No problem! Simply flair hard into the corn. The corn will reach up and cradle your plane, gently holding it for you to retrieve.
Three planes have taken a trip into the corn (Including Tanks 89" Slick, and my "race plane") and emerged with no damage what so ever!

Speaking up updates, Andrew was able to briefly get internet access and he did post a recap of day 1

Dear Flying Giants Members and Guests:
Here at Flying Giants, we don’t settle by just anything when it comes down to improving our planes in every way! I would like to share with you what I promised sometime ago.
As many of you may remember I showed DA85 and MTW RE3 (http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/fg107/37742-mtw-re-3-tuned-pipes-whats-story.html) and how good that combo worked! Now it’s time to show the RE3 and DA170 performance as I promised a while back! Reason for the delay is I worked on some new cool products with MTW that I will show later when the time is right so that took some time away from showing this, although... ::Read More>>
Article written by: Cracky on Sat-08-15-09Here in the Midwest, August means HOT and HUMID! It tends to be a mini-winter where only the hardcore get out to brave the heat and fly. On days like this I think about all of the awesome events that have taken place over the past few months. We've already had three Huckfests go down that were AWESOME. Rockford opened up the 2009 Huckfest season with with a bang. Once the storms cleared it was full on fun. This Huckfest had the largest gathering of 60% planes flying at once. Three 60% 260's were putting on a show for the crowd. It was an awesome site indeed. The St. Louis Huckfest turned out to be a mini-Heatwave with temps in the upper 90's and humidity that everyone would welcome (if we were... ::Read More>>
Article written by: ConRadical on Thu-08-13-09I've always been a fan of getting involved with the community, especially when I'm able to involve my hobby. I was able to do this last week when my church asked me if I could do some flying for the kids on their last day of Vacation Bible School, their theme was Flight School. I firmly believe that getting involved with the community will help our hobby. Having positive support from the community will go a long ways when people try to get your fields shot down. I know of some fields whose property is provided by the local government because of the positive vibe they bring. That’s something Flying Giants has always tried, keeping the vibe. Likewise the AMA protects us. If you aren’t... ::Read More>>
Article written by: TheTank on Mon-08-10-09We are officially into August and summer is in full swing around the entire country, as well as throughout the Northern Hemisphere! Event schedules are busy and whether you are in to "war bird'in", 3D Huckin, Sail Planes, or "Straight Lining," there are tons of opportunities to get out and and fly what ever type of flying you are in to! The vast event schedule across the country also gives the unique opportunity to check out some different events, and/or styles of flying that we may not be that familiar with and may/may not know much about! With that said, I wanted to share one of my favorite aspects of this hobby with you in hopes that you might check it out for yourself one day and possibly... ::Read More>>
Article written by: SleepyC on Fri-08-07-09Hey guys, I was speaking with Herve from PAU the other day, and he mentioned that he had some new planes available. Some of you may remember that Herve and PAU gave away four planes a few months back here on FG. Four lucky FG members became winners and had some real nice planes shipped directly to their doors! So again, I say THANK YOU HERVE! That was a great contest!
Ok the planes....
First out of the box, is the new 30% Extra sp. Herve is taking a very scale approach to his designs. That is not saying that the planes won't do anything from IMAC to full-on 3D, because these planes will do it all, but these planes will do it all while looking as much like the full scale aircraft as possible!

Article written by: SleepyC on Mon-08-03-09Well guys, the 2009 Snap A Huckfest is in the books.
And man, what a weekend it was.
I'd like to send a huge special shout out to everyone's favorite character Elie "Snap A Saurus" Houayes.
Not only does he work hard to be the fun exciting character you all know and love he also worked REALLY hard to put this event on.
Elie has been working for months to find a suitable location for this event, and with the help of Andy Argenio they found the Gardner airport. But make no mistake, the process of finding a place was not an easy one. Snap called many times telling me that he and Andy were driving for HOURS and HOURS on a Saturday checking out potential locations, and that no matter what they would... ::Read More>>
Article written by: SleepyC on Sat-08-01-09Ok, I'm in the Hotel room after 14 hours of insanity.
I took a small intermission to upload this report and these pictures before I re-join the party again.
To sum up Saturday, OMG!!! Holy ****. I can honestly say that the rain yesterday was completely forgotten today. From 7am - 8pm Snap A Huckfest raged hard and will go down in history as the best time ever in RC.
From the insane flying, to the three BEAUTIFUL Snap A Princesses, the day was more that most could take in.
I was so happy to see so many of the Flyinggiants family out today! Also so many spectators came to watch the fun. Simply put, the event today was perfect. The weather was perfect, the flying perfect, friends perfect,... ::Read More>>
Article written by: SleepyC on Fri-07-31-09Well the weather Gods frowned upon us today. Monsoon rain from 10:00 am till 8pm.
Did the rain get anyone down though? Heck no.. we still had a ball. Talking, story telling and sharing snacks were the way everyone enjoyed themselves. Today I heard more bench flying and Elie stories in ten hours under the tents that I have heard in 5 years. The true spirit of the hobby was alive and well in Gardner today!
Someone who responded to the rain in a different way was the man Snap-a-Saurus. After seeing "Buff Elie" in person, "Real Elie" had a pose-down with "Buff Elie", no matter how many people cheered for "Buff Elie", "Real Elie" claimed he won the pose off. (He didn't)
Big shout out to Dave Mathewson... ::Read More>>

Article written by: Billy Hell on Mon-07-20-09While on my multi-state RC show run I got wind of a giant scale event that was being hosted by the Cards of Lansing, MI. At last I saw an RC plane in the sky and seconds later got a great view of what looked to be be a pretty large outdoor event...SCORE!
The crowd was thick and there were some amazing looking planes on the ground. I don't usually travel this far North but I was happy to see some pilots that I know and received a warm welcome. I took a vast cornucopia of photos to help share the exerience.

Article written by: Kiwi on Tue-06-30-09With the advent of these 40%, 50% and 60% cubs I thought it might be a good idea to share some ideas on how to wire up one these critters. Like a lot of projects there are many ways to get a great result and I figured the way we have chosen to roll with this one might help someone out in the future.
One of the goals in this task is to eliminate voltage drop over long servo wires. Sure you could wire this up in the standard fashion and run individual cables to each and every servo. Figuring that out at say an average cable length of 5 ft we have anything up to 60 ft of voltage sucking wire floating around inside the fuselage.
So whats our setup.?? Well first of all we take the unregulated... ::Read More>>

Article written by: wizard on Fri-06-12-09Today was off the hook. Friday is normally the day that everyone is taking it easy to save their planes for the rest of the contest. This year is the exception. The pilots were really pushing it and putting on a show for the crowd. Rollers with the wing tips 6 inches off the deck. One slight mishap resulted in a plane upside down in the grass. One pilot accidentally touched the tail to the runway in a hover, luckily it was in the last few seconds of the flight and just resulted in a deduction instead of a zero for the flight.
A couple of the Helicopter pilots had some incidents. There were a couple wadded up on the ground and one boom strike that ended flights early. The crowd really enjoyed... ::Read More>>

Last February, a television producer for a new documentary-style investigative television program contacted Knife Edge Software. He was working on a new series for the Discovery Channel that examines viral videos on the Internet, and for this episode the one wing landing made featuring the Killathrill plane. (see below for link) The producer wanted to feature the one-wing landing that Jim Bourke made last September with an R/C airplane. He asked Jim if he could demonstrate the feat in RealFlight and then repeat it out in the field for an episode of the show.
We had ten days to build and modify an aircraft for filming. We considered all kinds of aircraft from... ::Read More>>
Article written by: SleepyC on Mon-06-01-09Chris Hinson recently started a Competition Rewards program with Extreme Flight RC, and he invited other manufacturers to join him in this endeavor. Everyone here at TnT Landing Gear Products thought it was a great idea. So TnT would officially like to add our contingency awards program to the world of IMAC and Freestyle contests.
TnT would like to reward IMAC and Freestyle pilots for their hard work and practice. We understand the commitment and the amount of dedication it takes a pilot to be at the top. Also, the amount of money it takes to stay on top. So in these tough times TnT would like to give the pilots something back for using our products.
The TnT contingency program is simple... ::Read More>>

Article written by: SleepyC on Sun-05-17-09Joe Nall 2009. WOW, what a week.
Officially the 2009 Joe Nall was the largest outdoor RC event in the world. (We are still waiting for the final pilot count, but we did hear it was well over 800 pilots!)
First off, I have to send a huge THANK YOU to the following people:
Mr. Pat Hartness.
Obviously without Mr. Pat the Joe Nall would not take place. Mr. Pat is very generous to share his amazing facility with all of us. I think I can speak for everyone that attended the 2009 Joe Nall when I say THANK YOU Mr. Pat for all you have done for our beloved hobby. Article written by: SleepyC on Fri-05-15-09Well here we are it's Friday at the 2009 Joe Nall.
What a week, the weather was perfect once again.
We are looking at well over 800 pilots (rumors of 1000 are floating around) making this the largest outdoor RC event in the world.
The noon time demo was amazing as usual and Matt Chapman put on a show with a level of energy that seemed to surpass all expectations.
After the demos, Kirby McKinney was honored by the IMAA with the life time achievement award. This was especially moving since Kirby was not able to attend, as he is still recovering from a triple bypass surgery. We know he is feeling better, but we still ask for thoughts and prayers to go out to Kirby and his family.

Article written by: SleepyC on Thu-05-14-09Hey guys, here we are, Thursday 2009 Joe Nall.
And again more people poured on to the grounds last night. I will try to get an official number later, but make no mistake, this event is HUGE!!!
I tried to upload more pictures last night, but there was literally no signal. I think the thousands of people here are all trying to use the same cell tower and it is simply overloaded. SO, we are going to get up early and upload photos in the AM each day when everyone is still sleeping, or flying!
To recap Wednesday, it was a beautyful day. Wonderful weather, great flying and lots of good times. I guess you could say it was another typical day at the Nall!

Tuesday was amazing. The day started off foggy, but that did not stop a 8am hover gaggle at the 3D flight line. The rest of the day was filled with flying, laughing and seeing FG friends from all over the US and Europe! FG is at Joe Nall in Full force. I can say with all honesty that the 2009 Joe Nall is going to be off the hook!
We have been driving around talking to people, and already FG members are here in force!

I emailed Vern and asked him to tell us a little about White Rose Engineering, and what they have to offer.
Vern take it away:
We offer what we consider to be the most complete product line of tail wheels for the giant scale market. All are CNC machined from 6061 aluminum. We offer assemblies for 20% to 50% airplanes. Our carbon fiber springs or struts are available in three sizes. Our titanium wire (haigh style) springs are offered in two sizes. The yoke and wheel is common to all the tail wheels. Article written by: Uncle Brett on Mon-03-09-09On February 28th I drove 90 miles down the freeway to beautiful Mission Bay in San Diego , CA to watch an EMAC contest and talk to Steve Dente (1bwana1) one of the originators of EMAC, and find out what it’s all about. What’s EMAC some of you might be asking? For those of you that don’t know what EMAC is or how it started, Steve filled me in. Here’s what he had to say.
FG: OK Steve, what’s “EMAC”?
SD: EMAC is basically the same thing as IMAC, the major difference being that it’s electric powered airplanes only, no gas or glow engines are allowed.
FG: So you have the same classes and fly the same Aresti sequences that IMAC flies?
SD: Yes, However at this point we only have... ::Read More>>

MAn-O-man Simply another Great Event!!!
The Gateway R/C'ers and the FFAA really put together a great event! The venue was perfect. The food was awesome. The flying was, well, look at the pics! It was as good as it gets! The storm system that rolled in on Saturday night pretty much eliminated our Sunday festivities but it didn't take away the fun we had the first couple of days! Everybody was just about ready to get a move on by the end of Saturday night because we just hadn't stopped the fun since early Thursday! C'mon wind! Is that all you've got?
Well, if that's the case... Then the guys down here in Jacksonville are NOT scared!
Saturday's flying was as good as it gets anywhere in the country! The winds decided to pick up on us as a front moved our way and the gusts were easily 20+ mph! This did not stop the FX3D Hucksters though. The "All Up Huck" was called off due to the ever changing winds but a couple of the guys did find time to attempt the "Tail Dunk" later in the afternoon! Young phenom "snoopy" was coaxed into hovering his 3.3m Compy Yak over, and then into, a wading pool that was placed at midfield. This was quite a chore as the winds... ::Read More>>

The hospitality and the attitude of the organizers, from the CD all the way down to the grill chef, needs to be commended and appreciated. This comment was tested by the many brave souls out in their shops tinkering, engineering and simply taking chances. And because of all this hard work, building a light airplane has been accepted as a great idea by almost everyone currently involved in the model airplane hobby.
Getting airplanes to drop weight is done in many different ways. Builders have all sorts of creative ideas. They cut holes in the plywood, they use balsa stringers instead of harder wood, they core the wings, they extensively mill and sand all the wood parts, the list could go on and on. To quote Damon's post...
This plane has been in design for over 10 years, first designed it in CAD, then 3D. She will have 6 hackers and be turning 6 20/14 props, the weight will be 85 pounds.
I started the design 10 years ago with the intent of it be 257" with 6 gas engines, but after doing all the calcs I realized that the plane would weigh over 110 pounds because I would need 45 pounds of ballast to off-set the engines weight at the trialing... ::Read More>>

I found the sound of RE3 to be different than my Greeve and deeper in idle. Although this is more of personal preference since no DB meter was available, I like the RE3 sound much better.

From the specs listed below, the weight WITH the case is just 3.8 grams, and if you choose to remove the case, the weight drops to a feathery 3.3 grams! I think that fits into the standards of even the most weight conscious competitor!
A few really nice features I like are, the receiver uses standard servo connections! So all your favorite foamie servos will work with no soldering! (Thanks FUTABA!)... ::Read More>>

FOAMIE SEASON IS UPON US!!!
During these cold winter months, flying outdoors is basically a fruitless venture. So instead of dealing with the cold temps, the high winds, and the wet rain and snow, most of us head indoors to partake in indoor foamie flying! These 4 - 10 oz Depron airplanes tend to fly very slowly and are more fun than most can imagine. The local golf domes and gymnasiums provide very nice flying fields for these little planes, and provide a heated, and wind free escape from the cold weather outside.

Article written by: smokin on Wed-11-26-08Thanks to “The Hobby”
It’s that time of year once again. The Halloween candy is almost all gone, the leaves have turned and are now in trash bags on the front curb, and we get to once again start our planning for the up and coming building season! While only those of us in the Midwest are subject to these seasonal weather changes, all of us get to participate in my favorite holiday of the year….Thanksgiving!
As I get older, the years seem to roll along that much faster and the time for reflection is all that much more rare. I’m sure it is relatively easy for most of us to come up with an internal list of things that we are grateful for to announce from the head of the dinner table on that... ::Read More>>
Article written by: SleepyC on Tue-11-25-08Hey guys,
I am so excited. I am, like many of you here on FG, a 100%, completely MAD, R/C plane addict. I would rather buy a new plane, and eat Ramen noodles for a month than to pass a plane by. If Betty Ford offered a program for RC, I would be enrolled. SERIOUSLY.
This year at the Ohio Huckfest, Wizard let me fly his 3D Hobby Shop 50cc Extra SHP. From take off to landing it was amazing. Wizard had a very nice setup, and the plane seriously felt like I had flown it for the entire summer in the first minute, it was that comfortable. At that moment I knew I had to have one.
I returned home, and tried to get the feeling out of my mind. (I did not feel like explaining to the wife why I HAD TO... ::Read More>>
Article written by: 1bwana1 on Wed-11-19-08Electric Power for model airplanes is becoming more, and more popular. At my local fields, I have been seeing a number of larger planes using electric power. In fact, 30% electric powered models are becoming fairly common around here. I have quite a few electric powered models ranging in size from DW Foamies to a 25% Extra 260. So, when deciding on a power system for my first 2 meter pattern plane, electric was the natural choice for me. This gave me the opportunity to visit with well known electric motor designer, and manufacturer, Steve Neu at his facility in San Diego. I learned a great deal during my visit, and thought I would share the experience with the Flying Giants community.

As the Manager of Knife Edge software, Jim had some experience with flying an airplane with one wing as they included this feature as far back as G3. (I'm going by memory, so if this G3 is the wrong version I apologize a head of time)

It is a full throttle run of 3D and good times. It is held on a 224 acre field that can't be built on for the next 100 years. The town is full of locals and country music stars. Within 5 minutes from the pasture you can find the homes of Tim McGraw/Faith Hill, Brooks and Dunn, The Judd family and many more. Last year we walked up to the town store and Vince Gill was playing. You can see that there is quite a bit of thought and countless hours of CAD design used to get the product just right.
Starting from blocks of aluminum the wheel assemblies are cut, and shaped. The tail support wires are precision bent, and the units are put together.

Article written by: SleepyC on Fri-08-29-08Hey guys,
Just trying to keep up with the action.
It looks like MANY flights took place this morning, and things are going well.
Except, 3D seth.
It looks like Seth's wing tube failed and he lost a wing mid flight!.
He tried to bring it around and actually got it down and landed but unfortunately the plane disintegrated on landing.
I'm waiting on a few emails to get the "Up to date" scoring, and report from the field.
From the early reports I'm getting in, the consensus is the facility is simply amazing, and the flying has been top notch. It looks like we have a new Bad Ass contest in teh line up!
NICE!
So Lets hear the reports from the guys that are there!

Hello from Clover Creek.
Well we are here and plan to help cover the event for you
all that could not make it.
So far the field is incredible…
There are 2 flight lines practicing like mad.
All the pilots look like they are as polished as can be.
We got a taste of some of the free style yesterday and today.
Remember this is different than the shoot out.
The invitational pilot have to fly free style every day as it is part of their total score.
With this much cash on the line I bet we are set for a real monster of a flying event.

Article written by: SleepyC on Mon-08-25-08August 29, 30, and 31st - Two Great Events, One Great WEEKEND!
This coming weekend is a brain burner, it will be host to both the DOGS annual Air show, and the Clover Creek Invitational contest.
Two great events, two great organizations and tons of amazing flying.
There really is no way to decide which one to go to, but if your close to either, I would highly suggest GOING!!
The D.O.G.S. (Dayton Ohio Giant Scalers) show has been going strong for 13 years, and is one of the reason's I personally know about Giant Scale Airplanes. Article written by: SleepyC on Mon-08-18-08Hey guys several of our members have PM'ed me asking I put up an alert on the JR 9303 2.4 version. Apparently the voltage regulator next to the gimbal is cutting into the wire bundle that rests on it. It appears to be a simple fix, or you could do some preventive maintenance, OR better yet, if you find your wires to be frayed, give Horizon service a call. BUT, since this problem is confirmed with multiple pictures on multiple radios, I would suggest either checking the condition of your radios wires, or having Horizon tech dept give it an eyeball before flying the radio again.
Now, we are in no way slamming JR or the 2.4 9303. Its a great radio, and by making sure this little issue is fixed... ::Read More>>

Toro has been to the event a few times, but this was my first time attending.
Toro's stories of past experiences at IRCHA had me excited to go. I'm a true planker 100% , but I do dabble with heli's now and again. (In fact the heli bug has been biting me quite hard lately so this event came at a perfect time)

A couple of weeks ago a friend of mine, Mr. Tony Mineart of Dyersville, Ia invited me to come and fly at a little gathering at their local full scale field this past Sunday. He told me that each year the Dyersville club puts on a demonstration afternoon and they wanted to have as many giant scale planes there as possible. So, I had some flying hours to burn off for school in order to finish up my ratings (27 hours to be exact). I thought “what could I do to burn up 27 hours of flight time in the fastest way possible?” A TRIP!!! I called up my Dad and asked if he would be interested in going on a trip. It brings us all great sadness to announce the FlyingGiants Connecticut HuckFest has come to an end; the canopies have been packed, along with our birds, sad goodbyes were spoken to friends new and old, and the Woodstock field is once again quiet. I’ve had some time to reflect about not only the weekend’s activities, but moreover, an uncanny modeling partnership which has been forged between two friends; The Academy of Model Aeronautics, and The FlyingGiants.

We're reporting live from Woodstock CT at the 2008 Snap-a-Huckfest! The field has complete facilities including a restaurant, a 2200' runway, and nonstop action.
Friday started with an early morning wakeup call from Papa Joe Stek. The FG Staff parked it at Elie's house last night. I've seen video of Jason Noll's 06/07 Free, and he was lower here than he ever thought about being at the XFC. Rolling harriers were scraping the ground. He and Chitty put on a great show.
Mark Trent, Danhakl, and the show-me RC team were looking good.

F3C Helicopter Nats
The F3C Precision Helicopter Nationals occurred on July 15-18, 2008 at the AMA site in Muncie, IN. During a week of perfect flying weather, some of the best helicopter flying in the world was going on. For those of you that haven’t seen it (which is probably most), F3C is the pattern or IMAC for helicopters. Precision, smoothness, and setup is the name of the game. Typically, F3C sequences consist of 3 or 4 hovering maneuvers and 5 or 6 “upstairs” forward flight aerobatic maneuvers.
The hovering maneuvers are performed over the hovering box with a central landing pad 1m in diameter and flags located 5m to each side. For each hovering... ::Read More>>

By the middle of the 1700s, the 13 colonies that made up part of England's empire in the New World were finding it difficult to be ruled by a king 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean. They were tired of the taxes imposed upon them. But independence was a gradual and painful process. The colonists could not forget that they were British citizens and that they owed allegiance to King George III.
A "tea party" and a "Massacre" were two events that hurried destiny. Along with general unrest these events united the colonists. In 1767 a tea company in India, owned by England, was losing money. To save the company, England levied a tax on tea sold in the colonies in... ::Read More>>

Article written by: SleepyC on Fri-06-13-08Well.....
Friday is coming to an end, and there was some great flying today.
We did the best we could to bring the live coverage to you.
Early this morning, a problematic laptop, and the complete lack of bandwidth (We were promised an amazing connection with repeaters, but it just was not to be) left us with no way to get the signal out to the server. Billy Hell from RCGroups came to the rescue and brought his Verizon card, with a signal amplifier and a NASA looking antenna. Problem solved... and the live show was under way.
What followed next was some SICK flying. We saw one and a half rounds completed from both Helis and the Planes. Some really tight flying went down, and the whole event... ::Read More>>

Article written by: SleepyC on Fri-06-06-08Well, Mike and Mark are at it again, so were going to call this PART 2 of the previous leading edge article: Dyno: lets build some HP together! If that thread isn't a big enough project, The guys decided to jump back into their 50% Extra 300 thread, and get the canopy done.
Once again Mike is pushing the boundaries of our hobby, taking things into his own hands, and conferring with all the FG members on how he should proceed.
Mark Mcclellan is the man cutting the foam canopy plug for Mike Chandley. I'll let Mark describe in technical terms what they are doing, but for us laymen, basically he's taking a 40% Carden Canopy (with PERMISSION) and blowing it up to 50%.
I asked Mark to briefly... ::Read More>>

Mike Chandley is at it again, pushing the boundaries of what is considered to be acceptable power from our model airplane motors. Some of you may recognize Mike from another thread where he is scratch building a 50% extra 300 using some very creative and innovative ideas. http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/fg42/22473-50-extra-300-a.html
Here in this new thread Mike looks to challenge the amount of power our Gas model motors are making. Mike has a long history in motor building and has been known to make some very powerful motors, to quote Mike:

:200:
Last night I loaded up the Van with my Carden Edge, and the FG cub so I could get up early and head out to Doc's invitational Big Bird Fly-in that takes place each spring and Fall. The show is always a ton of fun, great friends and great flying all weekend long.
The alarm goes off bright and early, and I awake to a cloudy sky, and a bit of a drizzle. Initial thought, Ug, go back to sleep.... its raining.
But I learned a long time ago, from a old crusty RC guru, don't ever let your local weather stop you from leaving. The guru gave me the following reasons:
1) You have already cleared the day with your spouse to go flying, no reason to give the day up, so get moving!

Article written by: Kiwi on Thu-05-29-08Righty ho folks seeing as you have either just got home from a big event, are just about to go to a big event or are about to invent your own big event I thought it an opportune time to come back and just take a look at where the 2.4Ghz transmitter revolution has taken us over the past three years.
I clearly recall at the Joe Nall three years ago with some guys in dark suits and large round framed darker than black sun glasses secretly getting a flight in on the days before the even officially opened with radios and no antennas. During the past two months A friend of mine " Juan Carlos de la Parra and I ,came up with the idea of helping my plane to compensate for the thin air and the altitude im flying at.
8000 feet above sea level. w
What is common is that the planes had a tendency to stall faster than on sea level and that you required more inputs on the surface to make what you want for the plane and also we have lost of power...
We experimented last year with the SFG's attached on the wing tips with great results in any maneuvers which required lateral area. For the loss of power all we can do is built as light as we can while helping the side forces and the stall effect.

I just hit the ground back home today, fresh off yet another very amazing journey to The Joe Nall. This event has become far more than a modeling meet for me personally – it has become a surreal reunion of sorts, and a who’s who of our family of FlyingGiants members, and dear friends. Everywhere you look, our colors are being flown, whether it be on a shirt, hat, countless vinyl graphics, snap-a-hauler’s, you name it. The FG presence at Triple Tree was beyond prolific. Article written by: Wayne on Wed-03-26-08Mike and I are going to Indianapolis this weekend to help out with the Indy Introduction to IMAC Seminar. We talked earlier in the week that it would be a good idea to try and get some flights in on our planes prior to that. Its been a long cold winter with no flying other than foamies for several months now.
Wednesday looked to be about the best one weather wise. It actually turned out to be one of the nicer ones we have had since last fall.
Mike showed up at my field with his new 126" Carden Extra 260. This plane has a new DA-200 four banger and it is AWESOME! You can definately notice the size of this new plane even before its assembled. We put it next to my 40% 300 and it made my plane look... ::Read More>>

Chris "Lucky" Carnes here with some exciting news. As some of you may know AMA decided to cancel the show team program. It offically ended the program after a 30+ year run effective the last day of 2007. After a year's worth of work new leadership has approched AMA with and new program that was approved and took effect Jan. 1st, 2008. This new program will put show teams in a whole different light with a new agenda and focus. The new mission is to reach as many non-model aviation people as possible through working and performing in full scale air shows. In this series of articles I will take you through some of the basics of build, electronics install, basic flight, and tuning for 3D. I will prove to you that once understood, these things are pretty easy to set up, and even easier to fly. Some of us hobby with golf, ride killer motorcycles, enjoy boating, fishing, photography, astronomy, videography, 4x4'ing, or car restoration to name a few. The rest of us more educated, upper crust, super humanoids enjoy the goodness of RC aeromodeling. Yeeeeah, that's how haard man do ;).
