There is a flying field in Killeen, it is ok. After about 11am you are looking right in the sun the rest of the day. Another close field is in Temple TX (where I used to be) and it is about 20 miles from Killeen. There are a couple hobby shops in Killeen and Temple, but nothing really good. There is a good one down in Georgetown, about 30 minutes from Killeen. Ft. Hood and Ft. Bliss are both kind of crummy, but if I had to choose I would go to Ft. Hood as at least you are close to Austin.
