I'll add that the best system I know of takes the normalized scores from a contest and sums them up for the year. Then normalize that total against the top guy to see how it sorts out.

This way a guy who is consistently at say 98% of the class winner beats out another second place guy someplace else who never gets closer than 80% of the class winner.

Under the current system the pilot in the second case gets the same, and possibly more, points that the guy who is always right on the heels of the class winner.

The points needs to reflect actual piloting skill, not some fluke of how many guys show up at a contest.
