If you do cut out wire and solder the connections, stagger the joints by the length of the shrink tube that you are going to cover the joint with. This will keep you from having a very fat spot in the wire to deal with.
Before I got a crimp tool I cut and spliced many wire leads on both helies and planks, and never had a joint failure.
