View Full Version : 30% Aviation Models quality
I am in the process of assembling a 30% Yak from Aviation Models. So far this thing doesn't meet my expectations. The fit of the rudder and elevators isn't too great. I was tempted to remove the covering and sand to get a better fit but then there is the problem of matching up the covering colors. The covering on the rudder doesn't line up with the fuse unless you want a 1/4 inch gap at the top. If you have the correct gap at the top then it is below the bottom of the fuselage. The fuselage had a plywood piece broke out and they filled it in with a piece of balsa. The front of the turtledeck has a piece of the ply missing and it was covered over. The plywood that it is made out of splits apart very easy. Some of the hardware barely has any threads cut into it. The aluminum dowels are bent in the stabilizers. Maybe I am expecting too much but I thought for the money it would be as good or better than the ARFs I have had from H9 and Great Planes.
Did I just get a bad one or is this what everyone is seeing?

i have heard nothing but raves about am products i also think you should have called sammy or garrett to discuss the problem before bashing the kit !!! im sure they would have been more than happy to rectify any problem you might have. I also believe its an isolated incident, i cant imagine Sammy would intentionally sell a kit or many kits with this problem. You also have to remember where they are made and quality control sometimes things slip by. Call Sammy i know he will make it right

I don't feel he was bashing the kit, I feel he was expressing concern about what he received.
He even asked "Did I just get a bad one or is this what everyone is seeing?"
So from what I have seen, his does seem to be an isolated case, and being such.. he needs the correct information to perhaps return the current kit, and get a replacement.
Then when he receives a proper model, he can post how great the service was, and how much he enjoys his 30% AM YAK!!
:)
I also heard nothing but good comments...thats why I bought one. I'm not "bashing" the kit just giving my opinion. If I thought it was the best built best quality ARF I have seen I would have said so. But it is not...

Dude that sounds weird. I think that fuselage was dropped down a stariwell or something before packing:D:D No but seriously, I have had AM planes and the quality is second to none.

I'm finishing mine up and am totally impressed with the fit and finish.
If it's that bad I would call them and they would make things right, I'm sure of it.

Definetly call them directly, your kit is definetly not the norm. Both of mine have been top notch.

My 33% was FLAWLESS!!!!! Could it have been finish sanded a bit better....maybe.....but it's a ARF. If you want better build it yourself. Paint is awsome, all the covering lines up perfectly!!! What I was most impressed with was the incidence and geometry of the plane was DEAD ON!!! I've never seen a ARF so true. Has anyone else measured theirs yet? I'm curious to hear your results. And please post pics....I'm interested in seeing the problems with your with my own eyes. I can comment about their customer service, as I thought I found some problems with the included hardware. Sammy offered to replace anything that wasn't right. In the end it ended up being my fault. The connecting hardware included with the 33% is bigger than 4-40. I was trying to mix/substitute some of my hardware with what they provided. I ended up ditching all the ball ends that were included and replaced them with my own stuff. Mostly because I wanted to use pro-links and nelson conencting hardware. IF my next plane is a ARF, I know where I'll be looking.
If you truely got a bad one, call them up and talk to sammy.........

WTF, I sent you a PM and will try to help you get this resolved.
Thanks for offering to help. There isn't anything that is soo bad that it has to be replaced. I was able to fix all the problems. Had to uncover a few pieces and I am using different hardware. Also repaired the broken pieces. Should be good now.
