Fall is upon us and the event season is starting to wind down. There are still great opportunities for photos this month. The Tucson Shoot Out is underway, there are fun-flies, and fly-in all over the place.

So grab your cameras and get out there. When you aren't the one on the sticks or the spotter, that's the time to be clicking away.

Here is a couple recent photos of mine for inspiration.

Here is Matt with his new bird, and a shot from the Terre Haute Air Fair.

Here is my first entry for the October contest. This is Paul Soha of St. Charles, Missouri, flying his Avant Carbon Extreme perilously close to the ground; obviously inverted! Unless the rules state otherwise, there may be more as this should be a great time of the year for pictures.

Well here are some of my first tries. My inspiration was Operation Market Garden. I was also partially inspired by the moive A Bridge Too Far: YouTube - A Bridge Too Far Intro

So here Goes! These were taken at the 82nd Airborne Division musuem at Ft. Bragg. Of course the good old skies of grey. Make me want to re-up sometimes....almost :198:

The full size pictures are much more clear. I have a 10MP camera and it shoots around 1600x1200 default.

These aren't great, but the school newspaper is doin an article on my obsession, and here are some pics they took. Take a look at the KM one. You can see the shadow of the prop on the cowl. Oh, and take a good look at the next to last one and guess what happened right after it was taken....lol

Here are my picks for this month.

1st place - PBart. Just great timing. Very nice shot.
http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74046d1194080291-october-2007-photo-month-contest-dsc_2226.jpg

2nd place - LawnJockey. I really like the way the plane in the background is framed by the canopy of the plane in the foreground.
http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74047d1194080291-october-2007-photo-month-contest-100_0767.jpg

3rd place - Somethnextra - I like the abstract feel of this photo.
http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74048d1194080291-october-2007-photo-month-contest-b17small.jpg

Honorable Mentions go to

capcanuck - I like the arrangement of the photo, and the camera angle.
http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74049d1194080291-october-2007-photo-month-contest-100_5696.jpg

selleri - Just a nice shot. The way that the mountains direct the eye to the plane, make it outstanding.

I want to make a comment on a few of the photos from this month. Some suggestions. I saw a couple of things that are pet peeves of mine, and want to point them out to help everyone with their photos.

One thing that really bothers me is the date stamp on quality photos. I think that there is a place for the date stamp, like family candid photos, birthday parties and things like that. If you forget and have the date stamp turned on there are a couple of things that you can do with photo editing software to improve the photo.

One thing you can do is to simply crop the photo to remove the date. Sometimes this even brings out the photo better.
http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74054d1194082062-october-2007-photo-month-contest-100_0257.jpg
http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74055d1194082062-october-2007-photo-month-contest-100_0257edit.jpg

Another thing you can do is to clone out the date stamp. Here are a couple of examples.
http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74056d1194082062-october-2007-photo-month-contest-100_0201.jpg
http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74057d1194082062-october-2007-photo-month-contest-100_0201edit.jpg

http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74058d1194082062-october-2007-photo-month-contest-scan0001.jpg
http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74059d1194082062-october-2007-photo-month-contest-scan0001edit.jpg

Another thing that bugs me is the shadow of the photographer in the photo. Here is an example. In a posed photo in bright sun like this you can turn the subject just a little to where your shadow isn't directly toward the subject. Another way, if you have a telephoto lens is to back up more and use the zoom feature of the lens to bring the subject into the frame you want.

http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74060d1194082062-october-2007-photo-month-contest-copy-20of-20picture-20312.jpg

This last one is just a suggestion not really a pet peeve. Long exposures can be fun and make for some great photos. Here is an example that was submitted this month. One way to improve on an image like this is to use a tripod. The use of a tripod will make all the background sharp and just the subject will show the motion blur.

http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74061d1194082062-october-2007-photo-month-contest-img_2866.jpg

The example below is one that my father and I worked on this month. It was a 30 second exposure lit totally by flashlight.

http://www.flyinggiants.com/forums/attachments/fg255/74062d1194082062-october-2007-photo-month-contest-7038r2.jpg

If I used your photo as an example, please don't take offense. Because, none was intented. I was just trying to give some hints and tips for better photos.
