Hey Gang,

As some of you may already know, as of now Matt Chapman will not be flying at Joe Nall this year because when people were asked, most said they preferred not to have their R/C flying interrupted.

I don't know about you, but for me one of the highlights of Joe Nall was getting to see acrochimp strut his stuff! He is one helluva guy and a huge asset to this hobby.

So lets hear it, what would you rather have, either uninterrupted R/C flying, or a ten minute break to watch one of the best aerobatic pilots there is?

Let Matt put on his show.

Your kidding Right, this isn't a April fools joke. Matt flying at the Nall was the high light of each day. Hey lets cut out all the demos at mid day also if people are going to get picky. It puts a nice break in the middle of the day to take a break and enjoy what this hobbies all about. Come on guys let's support Matt Chapman to come back this year. Hopefully it's not to late. Rob

Matt already posted that he will be there, just with an R/C plane. He didn't mention anything about putting on anther show though. It would be a shame to not have him fly.

Bring him back! Bring him back! Bring him back!.............

Put him in there! That is a huge disapointment to here. You don't want your r/c flying interuped take your butt home and fly ! this is a huge show and mr chapman is one hell of a show to see. im sure they could take the joe nall out of there schedule and put in a full scale p-51 meeting instead!
Im so sick of having to be so damn politicaly correct to make everyone happy if you don't like it don't go

One of the most memorable moments from the Nall was Friday afternoon as I recall. My wife and I were taking a little break from the flight line. We were back around the neck of the lake fishing. Matt was coming in to show center and must have decided to come around behind the crowd to get there. We heard a roar and then there he was, right over the treetops, decending, banked hard left and flat out screaming. He flew down the lake banking to follow the contour. It was like our own private air show. Thanks Matt!!!!

Seeing him work that Cap was badass. The routine with him and Frank flying in "formation" was just too cool. I think it was an awesome mix.

The omission of matt and the Eagle 580 this year...is making it easier to deal with the fact I won't be in SC this Spring.

I agree with Sukhoi26, why don't they "trim" down the 4 hour noontime show. I dont want to be misunderstood I love the Joe Nall but Matt is definitely a huge highlight. It would be a shame to not have him flying full scale. I guess having Patty Wagstaff there or even a full scale Python could make up for it though.

I believe Matt quit the aerobatic flying for personal reasons. He is a talented and intellengent individual and I think he knew when to stand down. That kind of flying takes constant practice and requires great phisical conditioning. Don't try to push him into something. I've seen, first hand , the results of not being 100%. It ain't pretty.

This was posted by kookabura in the Joe Nall thread, he's been involved with the Joe Nall fly-in for 20 years...

Unless something changes, there will be no full scale demo's this year. We all love watching Matt, but the feedback we've been getting is that a lot of our participants would just as soon keep flying.

Well I am bummed. Hate to say it but I smell warbird influence here. Kidding Kidding.

Well if there is any way to get him there let us know what to do. It will be a shame not to have him there when I am planning on spending a full week there.

Okay, time to "chime in" and get some facts squared away.

First of all...THANK YOU to all who have supported me and my flying at the JN for all of those years. It's been a blast. (with the exception of my first arrival at Hartness field years ago!!)
Second; I'm not "standing down" hangin it up or going away. I'm in the bizz for a few more years. I DO PRACTICE>>>I am still IN SHAPE>>> IN fact, down 22 lbs!

If you have been attending the Nall the last few years, you may have noticed the powers that be decided to move me from the half time show, to an end of the day demo afer the flight line shuts down for the day. Even did the demo at the BBQ. The word was then that more people wanted more time to fly and this was in an effort to keep all happy. Some liked it, some didnt. I think a 5pm show was killer from a light and temprature stand piont. I think at one piont, the T-6 team was thought to take up a lot of time and that also bugged some. I think I got lumped into that to an extent. The T-6 group were great and I enjoyd seeing them there as well, and they too are avid RC guys. However, it did take up the better part of 45 minutes to an hour. Too long for an RC event IMHO. Then it was just me. Down now to 25 mimutes. In reality, it takes time to do what I do. Safety first. Always. And, to be honest, I enjoy getting the chance to park up front for the now famous Joe Nall Cheer. (Based on that cheer, I'm surprised the word was "more flying" by the majority...maybe VOCAL minority??) However, that again does take time. And every time I need to move the plane, take off or whatever, the flying has to stop. Bummer for all that wait the hours for the pin. Again, I get it... I have offered to stage off airport, do and air start and depart without landing. Total time for the show 12 minutes. They were not intererested. Again, thats fine.
Anyway, last year Mike G. told Frank Noll of Hobbico and Team Futaba, the company that sponsored my appreance, the we would not be invited back. It was made clear that our program had lived it's course. Again, I think the writting was on the wall for a couple years.
All this said, I have to say...I dont totally disagree with them. I've been there a long time. If we take a year or two off, it may bring more interest in coming back. If we don;t come back, well then, so be it.
I must take this time to thank the whole Joe Nall crew. They ALL have always made me feel welcome and appreciated. Pat Harteness and his wife have always been wonderful hosts and enjoyable to spend time with. THis is just the progression of an event like this.
I hope to be there with my Super Cub and Bucker Jungmeister models and do some NASCAR flying. So, you'll know where to find me!
Now for the good news...
Don Anderson of Great Planes and Hobbico, and I thought this was a great opportunity to try a new venue. So, if any of you are heading south for TOP GUN, I will be performing there at the Lakeland Reg. Airport on Friday Saturday and Sunday. Everyone at Hobbico, Great Planes, Futaba, OS Engines and Fugi are very excited about this new event for us. I big thanks to Frank T. for making room for me at the NOON TIME DEMO to do some of the full scale huckin.
Again, to all of you guys out there that have supported the effort and voiced your interest in having me back the the Nall, THANK YOU! Just dont; let anyone tell you I'm hanging it up!! God, next they'll have me in a nursing home with some 285 lbs guy wiping my ass as I drool!!!
Be safe, enjoy the Nall..

GO TO TOP GUN!!!!

Matt, thanks for stepping in and setting a few things straight (I couldn't imagine you heading for the old folks home just yet!). Personally I think its a crying shame that you wont be performing at the Nall this year, I understand that things change but I can't believe that even after you cut it down to a 12 minute show it was still a no go, but thats just my 2 cents.

Don't misread me either, I think the guys and gals that put on Joe Nall do an awesome job and we are lucky to have such an event, I was just looking forward to some full scale huckin!

I find it ironic that time can't be alloted for a brief full scale demonstration but this event from my experience is about modeling...from the moment the sun goes up..until it goes down...and even then some after that if you've got lights for your plane or really good vision.

I have the most respect for the full scale aerobatic pilots. Let's face it..there in there WITH the airplane taking on the G's with their a**'s on the line.

Besides, it appears Mr. Chapman has to put the cowl back on that plane before it gets back in the air!

Look at it on the bright side Matt,

You can now be in the Budlight queue instead of the departure queue at 5pm.

It wont do much for the diet but its a great place to spend an hour on Pats balcony suppin on a cool one and bullchittin about how low and fast you were on that last cub low pass for the day..

I've had the pleasure of seeing Matt perform his full scale huckin at least 6 times over the last few years. I can honestly say that it has never gotten old or stale for me. I think some of you will agree with me on this, I actually feel like I'm a kid going to his first circus every time I watch him do his thing. DAMN what a rush.

Matt, you ARE the man. If you need a spotter while in the oval down at the Nall this year, let me know. Cheryl and I have missed a few Nall's lately because of work and other reasons. We will definately be there this year! I look forward to raising a glass/bottle/mug/cup/whatever with you.

The Nall would not be the same without the full scale demo. Full scale aerobatics is the staple for most, if not all, RC flyers.

Matt, and the other acts that have performed in the past, have blessed us with a privilege that you can not experience no where else. We are all, a close, tight net community of aviators in our own right. And when we all come together at Joe Nall, yeah, You can say that it is our own private air-show, because it is.

For those that wish to continue to fly instead, may be this year you need to really experience the Joe Nall fly-in for what it really is. Family, Friendship, and a lot of really great fun, surrounded by everything we love the most.

So, Matt, don't throttle back, show us your 2008 routine, and keep this tradition growing strong.

JoeHerbert
03-01-2008, 10:28 AM
yeah just fly it anyhow. or just go up and do the racetrack pattern till you get low on fuel. you can do aileron rolls and rudder turns. hehehe!!! just fly a little higher and maybe no one will notice. except when you dip in for a low fly by....some one can stand there with a transmitter and say I got it I got it.....

some one can stand there with a transmitter and say I got it I got it.....

I pulled that trick on someone as an ultralight was flying by one day. I picked up my radio and pointed it at the ultralight and handed it to a guy and said "here, you fly this thing!". The look on his face for about 3 seconds was priceless.

Kookaburra

OK guys, once again Mr. Gregory and Mr. Hartness have asked me to address this...

Spending 8 days or so every year ( this will be my 20th!) at the gazebo has has allowed me to get a pretty good feel for the "pulse" of the participants of the Joe Nall.

For the last several years, we have heard from many that they would rather keep flying their models than be interrupted for any full scale flying. With the changes this year and the logistics of shutting down two flight lines, we also thought it would be a good time to do everything we could to simplify things and also "test" the full scale issue!

Believe me when I tell you, NO business entity has EVER had any input to what we do. We find that just like the hundreds of pilots that look forward to the phenomenon that is the Joe Nall, so do the vendors.

Once again, if this thread is any indication of the way we come to think the majority feel, I can assure you it will be carefully considered for the future.

We will also attempt to keep the noon-time demos to one hour so as to keep everyone flying as much as possible.

I am speaking for Pat, Mike, Bob and the whole Confederate Air Farce, when I tell you we are looking forward to seeing you all in May!

mikedannielle
03-01-2008, 03:44 PM
So, sitting in the gazebo with those who aren't flying, gives a general feel for the "pulse"?
