Welcome everyone to the Riverside Spring IMAC & Freestyle contest. The date for the contest is May 3rd. & 4th.
The entry fee is $50.00 (AMA required) this includes Pizza lunch and beverages both days. The Pilot / Panel, Sound and ACS will not be scored. The pilots meeting will be at 8am and flying begins at 8:30 am.
We are making changes to our contest this year to help make it more manageable and fun for everyone. We will be having a Freestyle contest Saturday after the known rounds. This will give you guys a chance to have fun and compete in a Freestyle contest before the Tucson Shootout. There will be plaques for the top three finishers in the Freestyle.
Please pre-register at www.letsflyrc.com (http://www.letsflyrc.com)

I will be there (unless my @!#$% work gets in the way).
How will the freestyle work? I would like to enter. Im probable set up to take last
place, but would do it if it encourages others to give it a go...
Hopefully people that do not have a music synced 4 min routine can still give it a go.

Hi Russ,
I know the class will be limited, however, everyone is encouraged to enter the Freestyle. Jeff Szueber Jr. will select the pilots for the show. I know we want at least 12 to 15 pilots to compete. Details to follow later.

Good question Andy, Yes, 8:30 am. We will be flying a single line off the end of the runway until the sun is out of the way.

I've got no problems with the CD selecting pilots for the Freestyle.......and it will be nice to see a freestyle contest.

but I think we all need so hear how that selection process is going to work. Don't want to see a bunch of people P---off because they thought they could just sign up for freestyle and fly it.

What requirements will there be to fly Freestyle?

Also are you going to require you fly IMAC to fly freestyle?

Seperate charge for freestyle?

Is the number of freestyle pilots going to be limited to 12-15?

Thanks for your questions. We are working out some of the final details on the freestyle portion of this event. I will get back to every one in the next day or so.

DESERTRIDER49,
This time of year it can go any way. But if there is a common way it is to fly your sequence right to left.

Let me pose a serious question. IS SWEETPEA..aka Sam G going to fly Freestyle?? You might as well Sam, can't take all of those planes with you to Was. State. One or two slam dunks...you will never miss them, and will have more room when you move. I would suggest that the CD pick the freestyle fliers from the ranks of the IMAC fliers..Otherwise you will have a lot of people showing up simply for the Freestyle with no regard for the SAFETY of those around them. All the IMAC guys are very aware of safe flying procedures, and this may prevent 78 guys from showing up who can't fly a straight line.
My chances of getting my shorts clean in the washer, or just chuckin em...50-50. Nothing like a 50% Cub taking off full throttle...5 ft over your head, from the other end of the runway on your blind-side.
Certainly made me more aware of what can happen, and just how quickly it can happen. Of course I am not the CD for this and do not want to offer advice if it is not welcome. Jeff S. always does a great job, and I am sure this will be great also.

Thanks Jeff. I know you'll run it great. I also know folks would like to know if they can show up to fly only freestyle or if they have to fly both along with how the selection process will go. Let us all know when you get it figured out. I'm always looking for ways to run contests smoother, so hope you don't mind me poking my nose in to see what you come up with.

Me fly freestyle? I'd have to fly the contest first. I did not sign up for the contest because I cannot make it. St George is my last contest and even that weekend I currently have to work, so I may not fly another contest this year before I move.

As for a plane.....I've got one or two I could stuff in "safely" to try freestyle. I'd fly it within my abilities so it would probably be boring for all you spectators or at least you might get a laugh outta it.

Hey guys, if you are planning to go to Riverside, don't forget to sign up at www.letsflyrc.com (http://www.letsflyrc.com) under the SW Events.
By signing up ahead of time, you really help out the CD and his crew to plan out the contest accordingly. There are currently 23 pilots on the list, and I know there will be a bunch more, so do us all a favor and sign up early.

Pedro.

Ok every one the plan we are going to go with on the freestyle portion of this contest is, Saturday evening after all the know rounds have been flown for the day we will start the freestyle. How ever many people that sign up will fly there 4 min free. We are going to try something new with the scoring of the freestyle. Every registered pilot will pick up a slip of paper and will write down who they think were the top three freestyle pilots after the round of freestyle. The votes will be counted and those top three pilots will fly a shootout for the top three places on Sunday. The goal of this is to try to get every one involved with the freestyle. This is also supposed to be fun so if you are on the fence about flying free please give it a shot. It is more fun then you think.
We will be allowing any one who wants to fly the freestyle but not the IMAC portion of the contest to fly in the freestyle they need to notify one of us ahead of time and there will be a $15 dollar entry fee only for those who do not compete in the IMAC portion. For every one else the freestyle will be free if you choose to fly in it. We will be giving out trophies down to third place in the freestyle.
If any one has any questions feel free to ask away.

Very nice Jeff. May I make one suggestion.

On the cards for the pilots to vote best Freestyle I would suggest putting the freestyle criteria (scoring categories if there were judges). This gives the pilots (judges) something to base the Top 3 from and lets the pilots know what to add to shake things up.

I hope someone takes some video. I really wish I could make it. I would've thrown my plane in the ring for this one. I just finished painting my Ole' Edge 540 this weekend and it would have been great to see that plane in action again......its been down for 2+ years.

What a great plan guys. It's good to see frestyle as part of the IMAC event again. I am one who believes it should be included with every contest. Even in the full scale world the frestyle is part of it. I would love to be there with you all.

I gotta go spend time with the old boring Red Bull Air Race. Poor me. It's a lousy job but somebody has to do it.

Have Fun!!!!!

[quote=lazyboyflyer;423681] The Pilot / Panel, Sound and ACS will not be scored.

Hi Guys,

I hope you have a good contest. When I lived in CA I was not flying IMAC at the time, but flew at this field for a few pattern events and enjoyed it (... except when it rains and the road gets really slick :) ).

Just out of curiosity, why are 3 elements of the scoring criteria not being scored? The pilot/panel part doesn't reallly bother me, but the Sound score can actually make a difference in a round tally, and the ACS score is K-factored per class, affecting the higher classes the most. These elements make a difference over the course of the contest and help differentiate pilot skill.

If you can shed some light on this decision that would be great, or share issues others may not be aware of. Just for instance regarding sound - if not judged - do you "self-police" and watch for howling props and such, or just let the whole issue go? Anything in place of ACS there (maybe club/field limitations?). Just wondering why elements that affect score are not being used, and thinking that when some of the SW pilots go to the Nats they may be at a disadvantage if not accustomed to this criteria.
Thanks,
Jim

lazyboyflyer
04-08-2008, 09:41 AM
Hi Jim, The reason why we decided not to bother with it, is some of the judges in the Southwest region have not accepted to score the sound and ACS. They'll just score you a 5 for sound and 5 for ACS, no matter how well you maintain both. It just isn't fair to the pilots that work hard on it and don't get the score for it, so why bother.

Jim Woodward
04-08-2008, 10:25 AM
Hi Lazyboyflyer,

I appreciate your explanation, sympathize, and offer another angle; perhaps it is not fair to the pilot that works on each criteria, but is is definately not fair to the judges who do seek to apply the criteria, but are (in a way) bullyied out of the chance to do so by the judges who blatantly will not judge to them.

Just to say what is rarely said - if a CD recognizes that particular judges are knowlingly disregarding certain judging criteria, those people should not be allowed to judge as this will only create contest-to-contest or regional biasis which is exactly what the juding certification programs seek to abolish.

By disallowing these elements to be scored a bandaid may have been placed on other problems. Addressing the local concerns and creating a fun atmosphere are certainly key elements of a good contest, keeping enthusiasm up, getting people to return and hopefully bring new people with them, and should be considered, but so are national contest standardizations. Its a tough balance, but perhaps the folks who choose not to apply this criteria should not be allowed to judge even if they are some of the most experienced persons.

These are just some thoughts. All of us contest goers do truly appreciate the hard work and deicison CD's make to host contests.
Thanks,
Jim W.

So RBAR is the excuse you are planning on using to get out of it. Reza and I are on to your cheap game, and are not going to let you get away with it. Besides, the best days at the RBAR are the Thursday, Friday practice and qualifying. You can do both!

A twelve pack goes up to 4 cases, that's about 800% a year! Your beer interest rate is even worse than the IRS. What did I do, make one of those sub-prime, variable rate bets?

So far, it looks like Widmir Heffeweizen is winning. Where do you get it, and is it expensive?
