Forsyth flyin is this weekend. Who all intends to go out?

I'll be there! - with bells on!

Now got my Piper Cub on floats (i nearly gave it a test flight on the lake in our backyard this morning!)

Unfortunately i didnt quite get my new Mojo 60 ready - I was looking forward to tearing up the 3d zone with that! - it needs yet another roll of covering (thats 5 rolls of solafilm now = $125 bucks worth!). But anyway I might try and squeze the Funtana in the car to show the circuit flyers the error of thier ways.

Catch ya there!

Sounds like fun but I'm going to give it a miss... I haven't flown all winter and I'm afraid I've forgotten which way to push the sticks... also it just wouldn't be the same without my Funtana to stir up the old farts! Jeremy - good luck and let us know how you get on!

Just finished the last committee meeting before the event. All still on and prepped :198:

3d runway is now 25m longer than last year (another 10m added Saturday) and with full clear approach both ways (Carpark has been moved to accommodate this).

I will be bringing some pool noodles, streamers and balloons for a bit of hooliganism around the 3D arena :198: anyone say Red Bull Foamy Racing? :bananalam

Need a trailer for the amount of models im taking!!!!!

Jeremy, Do you have a 30-90sized sport model for doing the sportsman aerobatic routine at lunch for a promotional demo? We are trying to make it appeal to all by not having a large expensive aerobatic model go through the sequence. If not, Terry, could you fly the CMAC trainer through it?

Hey Alex,

yip I do have an ESM Rush Freestyle that i picked up off trademe a while back, with my old 46ax on it. it actually flies really good - i will chuck it in the car (with the other 5 odd planes i am planning to take). catch ya.

Mr Loopy
08-26-2008, 02:32 PM
The CMAC or should I now say CRFC trainer will be there. What other demo's are going to happen?

ampEater
08-27-2008, 02:59 AM
Sweet guys, one of you could fly it and one can call. I'll commentate over the PA.

There will be a scale routine demo also, and some solo spots.

Maybe a joint 3D demo? ??? lol

I have access to a bunkroom facility in birdlings flat for the Sat night, couple of spaces available if people are interested. $20 for the night. First to get back to me first served.

How did the weekend go? any disasters? Did the old guys kick up a fuss again over the 3D flying?

Forsyth was good, the weather was kind to us (esp. on sunday) some nice models present and some good laughs were had.

I reckon i might propose a bit more of a timetable on the main flight line for next year: maybe large quick models between 10-10:30, slower biplanes and smaller models between 10:30-11 - that sort of thing, with general flying in between.
i think it is quite cool seeing similar models flying at the same time. and some pilots maybe a bit more comfortable flying with other models all doing roughly the same speed. (clearly it would also give the large aerobatic modelers half an hour to tare up the sky without any groaning from the grey hair brigade!),

but overall i had a good time - will def be back for next year.

Mr Loopy
09-01-2008, 01:37 AM
From what I heard there was some constant rule changes with the 3D area. Was a great day on Sunday and there was about 76 registered pilots :-)

ampEater
09-02-2008, 02:07 AM
84 registered in the end :198:

Yeah was a bit disapointed in a couple of individuals who undermined my authority in that area, the same people who appointed me as director in that area. Next year will be different.

Anyone keen for an all aerobatic fly-in?

jsteel
09-02-2008, 06:55 AM
Yup as always I'm definitely keen for an all aerobatic / 3d fly-in. I think it should be kinda an invitation only event of such so we don't end up with the geriatrics there !!! lol

I would be happy to help you organize the 3d fly-in Alex as I'm sure would others :)

I don't think next year will be any different at forsyth as it was worse this year than last year !

ampEater
09-02-2008, 10:09 PM
Right. So what date shall we organise this for?

I rekon it can be a general invite as we make the rules, and if people wish to fly, they will have to follow them :198:

If you guys like you can promote it as a Chch "Freestyle Aerobatics Expo" and use the ad I drew up for the last two (or a modified version) We have one similar planned for later in the year in Dunedin but I see no reason we can't have another in Christchurch - who knows you may even get some of the Dunedin guys to finally come up here for a change?

this was last years banner, up to you guys - I'd happily modify it for you - would be good to get in the fliers world which is something we never got round to doing in the past...

Up to you guys, I haven't exactly been the most active person in aeromodelling over the winter months but now that its starting to warm up again I'd be there to support you.

Cheers

Well Alex, how about we pick a date that fits around the nats and any other up coming events? Anyone got any opinions on dates ?

Mr Loopy

25th and 26th of October is scheduled as a 2 day event at CMAC. We could always snaffle this date as the turnout is generally poor these days

Hi All - Glad you had a good weekend at Lake Forsyth and with such a large number of entrants. No doubt there will be plenty of photos and stories told in the Tail Feathers, looking forward to it.

Just curious - haven't noticed One Can on F G for some time. Is he still flying the big 260? I really enjoyed his freestyle routine at the Queensland Challenge last year.

Cleaning up the hobbies room last night and stumbled accross my old C R F C membership card. It is dated 2nd May 1983 and signed by Treasurer Jenkins. I guess that automatically places me in the Grey Haired Old Farts cupboard too. lol

Enjoy Your Flying

Terry, I don't have a problem with using one or even both of those dates for an Aerobatics day at the Willows, as it is already booked in with CMAC it is as good as done. I am not currently a paid up financial member of CMAC (or any Christchurch club at present) so It would be good if you could as act as "Contest Director" to keep the old boys happy.

As for OneCan John, yes he's still lurking around - he's been a bit like me over the winter and hasn't exactly done a lot of flying of late... He still has his "Nipple Pink" 260 and I'm sure he still checks these forums so he'll probably chip in with an update himself.

Labour weekend that weekend, and as a result several fly-ins are taking place around the country.

How about the 22nd and 23rd of November? I have an indoor booked for that weekend also:198:

whats wrong with labour weekend ? The other fly-ins that weekend aren't in Christchurch are they?

NZ Scythe
09-03-2008, 04:27 AM
Labour Weekend was the reason we booked the 25th - 26th in the first place, so people could come up from down south and have the monday to drive home... I thought the reason you guys wanted a 3D / Aerobatics weekend was to get away from the "Old Boys Piper Cub Rally's"? I think Labour weekend is a good date personally, probably mean less of the old 3D Nazi's will turn up to spoil the fun anyway...

jsteel
09-03-2008, 04:33 AM
LOL, here here Patrick. Yeah I have to agree, Labour weekend would be the most suitable weekend for people to travel, because no other Fly-In's are on in Christchurch & because we already have a site booked for it and ready to go so would make it so easy !!!

NZ Scythe
09-03-2008, 04:36 AM
Plus if it does work out on the 25th/26th we can even do it all over again in two weeks at the official Aerobatics Expo in Dunedin on the 15th/16th of November which is already booked in.

ampEater
09-03-2008, 07:55 PM
Alright guys, Labour weekend it is. I just suggested otherwise due to the fact alot of people head away over that weekend.

We gotta get some others from around the country to come along.

Patrick, if you wanted to modify your poster/ad, do that. I'll book the Forsyth site if people are ok with that. I could get accomodation sorted for the Sat night as i may have access to a house 3min from the field, may only sleep 6 though. Otherwise on site camping is also an option, and there are several B&Bs 5min down the road also.

NZ Scythe
09-04-2008, 02:31 AM
put the forsyth site idea to the vote, I'd vote no personally, I don't find it all that flash (well in the past anyway, heven't been there for 12 months) the strip was never very good and you usually have to fly looking into the sun and then you have hills behind you... the lake is fun tho.

The Cmac site is booked which doesn't happen very often, its much closer too... may be a bit more windy?? let the people decide. I wouldn't be up for staying overnight

jsteel
09-04-2008, 02:39 AM
Hmmm... that's a hard decision to make lol. Forsyth has the lake to fly off aswell and a massive area. But CMAC is closer and already booked.

I don't think the sun would be a problem Patrick. We're organizing it ourselves remember, so we can just have the pits on the other side of the runway :) NO SUN THEN

Damn you bet me to it. COme on Patrick stop being such a downer bananajump haha. We spent $600 on a vibrating roller to get the strip smooth, and not to mention moving the strip 50m further out to get away from that rough track. I didn't see or hear of any problems with the runway this year.

I am +1 vote for Forsyth.

09-04-2008, 06:26 AM

Do we want heli guys there aswell ? More people and they usually stay to themselves over in their areas ???

Unfortunately I've lost their numbers along with my old phone. I'm not sure about the Helis, again put it to a vote as i could go either way.

jsteel
09-04-2008, 06:36 AM
Yeah I don't really mind as I don't fly them lol, just thought it would be more similar minded people and they keep to themselves so makes no difference to us. I'm easy either way so I agree, put it to a vote !

So are we gonna be shunned from Radio Flyers for organizing our own Forsyth Fly-In in spite of them ???? :D

ampEater
09-04-2008, 06:44 AM
Yeah welcome the Helis maybe.

Haha Radio Fliers don't exist atm lol no field to fly at still

Mr Loopy
09-04-2008, 02:43 PM
I'm not worried where we fly. CMAC is closer but the paddock is rough. Forsyth is flatter but would need the pits on the other side due to the sun. Either way they still have sky. I resigned from CMAC comittee the other day as am sick of the hipocritical geriatrics

NZ Scythe
09-04-2008, 03:15 PM
Ok well chances are it will be less windy at Forsyth... Alex see if you can book it first then we will decide, It should be quite good facing the other way, of course that will mean flying over the lake so there better be a boat handy just in case!

My vote would be for forsyth, even though it is a 50min driver for me - rather than a 5min drive. The space really does suit large models alot better. and a better chance of not getting blown away.

I had better rattle my dags and get my compy in the air for this, as it sound like my wild bunny is sold.

Hey alex, was there any fuse damage to your 2x2?

Also maybe i should give you a ring Patrick, i looking to paint my comp-arf. i just want to paint the bottom half of the fuse and do vinyl graphics after that. i am just not sure what to do with the gel coat (sand it - or dont sand it?) i have heard that you can just paint over it with the right primer? what do you think? clearly i am after the usual stuff, a reasonable finish without adding too much weight. thanks.

Sand that sucker!!! Ive just painted mine using standard ppg dulon paint thinking it would do a nice job. Looked really good until i pulled the masking off along will all the paint which i had just put on. I think all the release agent used on the moulds may have caused the paint not to stick but the parts i did sand stuck. (also gave it a good rub down with thinners) oh well, used 4 rolls of masking tape to date and about 2 weeks of time so far and it isnt looking half bad now.

There is already a pits area mown on the other side of the runway as this is where we usually fly from, and the lake is over 250m away fromthe current runway.

Will try get it booked asap.

Haven't checked over the 2x2 yet so not sure.

You'll have to come down to Chch for this too Steve, your welcome to stay at mine again, but I'll be staying out there somewhere on the Sat night and having a few beers and a bit of a night fly.

Jeremy, Regarding the compy... Richard is right - you have to sand the sucker! if you want a nice finish but don't want to add weight I suggest you choose a lighter colour...............(ba dum bum pshh - LOL I crack myself up sometimes!)
naa seriously there isn't really a a think as a nice looking light weight paint solution, you can use 2k auto paint which generally gives a good fuel proof finish and depending on the colour/primer combo you can get away without adding too much weight, but if you go for a pearl or any other tpe that requires a clear coat you will add weight for sure.

Forsyth sounds like it could be the go, better see if it is available.

Everyone put in two name ideas and we will pick the best ones.

Here's my two ideas:

- Piper Cub Restricted Airspace Weekend.
