Morris Hobbies Morris the Knife kit, anyone have any comments about it? This will be my third season on mine. I have decided I don't really like it though as it's a bit pitchey and sometimes slightly unpredictable on the elevator. It really is not a plane for flying pattern that's for sure. I expected this out of the plane and it belongs hovering as this is where it seems to shine. With the Saito .72 it has good vertical and I can do multiple rolls on an upline. It knife edges like crap though and about the only 3D it can do is an elevator or hovering. It floats really well with that big wing so it's a mild flying profile.
Here's where the problem is, I feel it's nothing but a hovering trainer and I want something that I can put my 72 in for 3D. I saw the video on the Extreme site of the Chinn Yak and was blown away by the flips it would do. No way could my Knife do that.
I used external carbon pushrods for elevator and rudder and because they run under the ailerons my aileron travel is limited. However, it rolls fast so the somewhat limited aileron travel hasn't been a big deal. Should I be mixing in flaperons for this plane? Anyone user flaperons on the Chinn Yak?

The Chin Yak is definitely a lot looser than the Knife. For all out wild 3D, it's one of the best. Another .40 size profile you may want to look at is the Primo from Swanyshouse.com. It's got a thinner wing and flies smoother than the Knife or Yak, but will still snap with the best of them. I've got the 60 size with an OS 120AX and it flies incredible.
It you want to step up to a 60-90 size, you can't go wrong with the Mojo or Primo from Swany, or the Yak or Fusion from OMP.

Thanks for reply. I will check them out. I'm liking the Chinn though as I want the craziest little plane I can get ahold.

Swanny Primo and the OMP Fusion are perfect for a pattern-3D slab in the .40 size.I have had a few of the Fusions and just love that damn plane,i have an 80" Fusion in the works right now, should fly in the next 2 weeks.

The thickness of the wing on a Knife was like pushing a door throught the air (turned sideways!) This accounted for the pitchy-ness of this bird. Kyle did a video for Morris with this thing and it was a challenge to fly. Forget making it tail-heavy like a 3D plane should be.......... It made for some snappy stuff. We had two. I sold mine after the first flight and Kyle followed suite a few flights later.

Selling after one flight?fg92 It's good to know that I'm not the only one who isn't all too fond of their Knife. I've noticed not too many people have them. I guess I have had mine for too long! It is a nice plane for hovering though and that's about it. No way will mine snap roll, it'll roll pretty fast though. Loops good, pulls awesome vertical rolls, inverts decently, but that about all. On low rates it'll fly around pretty gracefully if that's all you're doing, flying around.
So for the 3D beginner who needs a cheap sturdy bird to practice their hovering on, here ya go. Mine is for sale, any takers?
I just about fell over though when I saw the Chinn Yak doing crazy stuff. All I could think was wow, are profiles supposed to do that? My Knife is really mild compared to that. So yeah as stated before, a great beginner hovering craft.

The Chinn Yak is a good profile. It has a wide body and is tougher than the narrow body/no CF tube versions, but that makes it heavy. I had a Chinn Yak and sold it because for the money it did not fly as well as some of the cheap ARFs. The Modeltech Sukhoi was a great one for $100 but you can't find them anymore. Ebay has a couple good looking slabs in the $100 range.
The best kit you could build would be a Mojo or Primo from SwanyHouse.
All the OMP stuff is nice but pricey.
Profile Brotherhood is the place to learn about all the slabs. http://www.theprofilebrotherhood.com/forum/
