I Just bought a used Peak Yak 54 71" bare airframe. I am new to 3D (have some pattern experience 15 yrs. ago).

I am trying to figure out the best & biggest gas engine that will work in this plane. Previous owner ran a Saito 180 in it. I want to step up to a bigger plane (30%) in the future when I have more expierence in 3D. I would like to buy an engine that I could run in a 30% plan as well as the Yak 54 71"

I have been told a 26cc will work for the Yak but want to go as big as I can. I have limited funds and don't want to buy 2 engines. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Sorry to say this but that airframe is not really designed for a gasser. You may be able to put a 26cc engine on the nose but the performance will not be 3D worthy. The 180 Saito was a good choice. A 30% airframe is usually powered by a 50cc engine. You try and mount a 50 on that airframe and you are asking for trouble. Remember weight is you enemy when it comes to 3D. Think it over, if you want to fly and 3D that airframe power to weight is the key. If you plan on moving up to a 30% plane then your just going to have to face the fact that you will have to by a suitable engine for it.

i have a mld 28 you can get it from cermark. it is mounted on a aeroworks yak 72" it has almost identicle weight of my saito 150 with mounts. it swings a vess 18/6 8100rpm and 17lbs of thrust on the first tank of break in. i seems to have less vibration than my saito had.

The MLD 28 is what Way at Peak Models told me would be a great engine to put on my 25% Edge, im hoping to beable to try out a SPE 26cc and see how that pulls my plane around before pulling the trigger on buying the MLD28. Good Luck!

I have a YS140L in an SU31 from Peakmodel 25%. Unlimited vertical all the way. Look up ebay, there's plenty available which are in good condition.

My brouther flew his qui qui 72inch yak with a dle-30 this week end. Engine fit in the cowl all but the plug and muffler. Weights 28 oz. Engine turned a 20a vess well. Weight is close to the same as mld 28 much more power,we have both.:198:

Dle 30 would be a good choice same size as the mld 28 and has more power. We have both and the new Dle 30 is very impressive:198:
