Hey guys, we don not have too much to report but it looks like TEAM USA is flying well!!
I'm sure when the guys get some extra time we will get a "full on" report, but until then,
Brett sent us the following a day a go:
Day 2 done. Today went much better than the first day for me.
Flew the backup today because I wasn't happy with how the primary flew yesterday.
My round was much better, hopefully I can build on that and put in a good result for the US.
Threw an ounce in the nose of the primary and flew it at the practice field tonight and it's flying even better,
so I will be back to flying the primary tomorrow.
Things are going pretty well, all leading up to the semi-finals and (hopefully) the finals.
So far my first world championship has been a fantastic, all-be-it stressful, experience.
All of us really appreciate the support from back home. Keep it coming!
Ryan Smith (QQ's caller) added:
So far. Things will change (hopefully for the better) tomorrow regardless.
You know who the top pilots in a given group are for today, sure, but there are three more days before you
can say how things are going to end up. I wouldn't put too much stock on what you're seeing right now.
And remember- Quique is not flying for the team this year, he's an independant as returning world champion,
so his scores do not count for the team. Nevertheless, I think the US is poised for a good finish overall,
and to say I'm pleased with Quique's flying since we've been over here is an understatement.
Below are day three's scores, and of course more pictures from Cindy Wickizer!
Thanks again for the pics!!
Keep going guys! USA- USA - USA- USA - USA!!!
ATTENTION!!! ATTENTION!!!
Guys this thread is updating,
when we get any info, you get info.
I really want to keep some attention
on the Championship, so I'm going to
leave this thread in the leading edge slot...
but keep reading it, Andrew and the
guys are reporting back when they can!

It is actually a variable thrust setup not pitch. And I think it is the only setup like it :)

Looks like yaw vectoring to me. I suspect it's the plettenberg system.

Do these planes tend to come out nose heavy due to the pull/pull rudder and all the electronics

Just a note, the list I posted may not be accurate becasue I am not sure how they are going to calculate the
final scores for the Preliminaries.
There are 3 ways they could do it:
Are they normalizing all the pilot's score for each panel and taking the 3 best normalized scores for each pilot?
OR
Are they dropping the low raw score, totalling the 3 best and then normalizing from there for each flight group?
OR
Are they going to wait until all the pilots have flown all 4 rounds, drop the low for each and then normalize as a
group to get the top 30??
I was just told that #1 is the way they will do it. So my list is wrong.
USA can be! But small French are the best!:198:

Not usually a balance problem...in most cases it is simply to save weight. In addition, electric setups do not require a
robust spinner for starting.
On glow setups, there may also be a slight noise reduction with a non-metal spinner....limit is 94db at 3 meters.

My list was done prior to his final flight and included only those that had completed all 4 flights.
Plus I only normalized the raw totals, which is not the way they will do it.
Here's the process as I understand it.
Each panel of judges will be treated as a "flight" for that panel the TBL will be applied first, then the raw scores finalized and normalized.
Then the high 3 normalized scores for each pilot will be added together to get their score for the preliminaries.

Here's the straight scoop from Chad Northeast (Canada):
Hey Guys
After the last pilot flies today, they will TBL all the results (they need everything in order for TBL to work, hence the reason for not normalizing),
from that all you will see is normalized rounds just like a normal contest.
At that point, the lowest round is dropped, and the best 3 of 4 determine the preliminary round finishing order.
The top 30 pilots (30 if more than 100 total, 30% if less than 100 total) will advance to the semi-finals on Friday.
At that point, the preliminary scores for the top 30, are re-normalized back to 1000 (the average of your total score if the first place pilot has 3000 points).
On Friday two rounds of F schedule will be flown by the semi-finalists, and the best 2 of the 3 scores (carry-in, and two F) will count for the semi-final placings.
At that point the top 10 will advance to the finals on Saturday, and fly two rounds of F, and two different unknowns.
Tomorrow is the rain-day/official semi's practice, so everyone who moves on will be out getting ready http://image2-0.rcuniverse.com/e1/forum/image/s45.gif ....I think some already started LOL (Andrew!).
Hope that helps clear it up.

No, variable pitch is actually illegal if i remember correctly. This set up is for variable motor thrust angle. Could help in knife edge and cross wind situations when mixed with rudder. First and only set up I have seen like this.

I seen where someone said it changes his side thrust. His plane doesn't have the side area that some of the widebody planes have, and this helps him in manuevers like the rolling loop and such.

Yes, the term is Contra rotating prop if they are on the same axis of rotation but spinning in opposite directions. Counter rotating prop is if you have a twin engine airplane with both engines turning inboard or both outboard.
I am a huge biplane fan and I find it pretty cool that there are SO MANY bipes in the line up this year. Heck, even CPLR and BPLR monoplanes are biplanes when you see how big the 'canalizer' is on them in relation to the wing.

Has anyone ever designed a full scale plane with the styling and aerodynamics of these pattern ships?
When this happens in full scale, every single Extra, Cap, Edge, Laser, Giles, Yak, type of scale aerobatics plane is instantly going to be outclassed, once the new scaled-down version is made. The best looking full-scale plane to me is the Slick 360, as this has the most potential to be scaled into more of the dimensions you see on pattern planes. IMHO.

Here is my take on the effects of the T:
1. Reduces rudder sensitivity around neutral
2. Adds yaw aurhority
3. Pushes/pulls/ all lock on a little better
4. Gives "carve" in yaw instead of "skid"
5. Small heading corrections easier to apply
6. Adds positivie pitching moment with rudder application - how much seems dependant on how tall it is
7. Doesn't affect roll mixing
8. Plane will deviate less from the intended line during rolls or point rolls
9. CG assessment - allows you to fly a nose-heavy plane as measured statically, but in flight it will "roll" and maintain 45 lines like a more neutral plane
10. Elevator - maybe some more pitch authority but not a drastic difference
11. Stall Turns- some can feel a difference, It is barely noticeable for me
12. Spins/Snaps - uneffected for the conditions I fly (snaps high rate aileron, spins, full rudder/elevator, tiny aileron).
Abbra -mid wing, Aggressor, mid/low wing, Osmose, mid/low wing, Passport, low wing. The basic effect was the same for each of these planes. For me, it just makes the FAI maneuvers easier and less work. I've also flown the Passport with YS 170, now with CDI, Electric (with and with our SFGs), straight stabs, and anhedral stabs, T-can and no T-can, used the CA models T then made my own when I lost the original - even with small dimentional changes to the T nothing was changed as to the effect it provided the model.
The T-Cannalizer makes the models easier to fly in FAI.
Thanks,
Jim

Thanks,
Jim
= Cannalizes.
See I was right!

Sorry guys, it has been a heck of a day!! We had today off for practice of the F pattern. The Top 30 went out and practiced at all there practice fields. The US team was up and on the road by 8:15. We all got some great flying in by ourselves. Just the 4 of us and some nice HOT weather. Tomorrow is the semi's were we will get the Top 30 down to 10. Well its 9:30 here and I'm going to bed. Good Night.
Keep up the good flying guys!

Has anyone ever designed a full scale plane with the styling and aerodynamics of these pattern ships?
I kinda thought the Turbo Raven was the closest I have seen....
Problem is the weight of the motor and the wing spar... kinda pushes the pilot backwards in the fuse... also.. the full size guys are lazy.. they just slap the stab on top of the steel tube fuse :(

Here is my take on the effects of the T:
The T-Cannalizer makes the models easier to fly in FAI.
Thanks,
Jim
would a Imac plane see the benifits of one??

It doesn't really matter, because full-scale planes don't have them, so we can't use them in IMAC.
Keep up the great flying guys!!
