View Full Version : Comparing AXI and Hacker motors

I am looking to do a 50cc electric conversion.
I will be using a Great Planes Giant Reactor. 86" wingspan, 1550 sq in area. Projected weight in the 16 lb range.
I am looking at the Hacker A60-16L or 14L. BoneDoc mentioned the 18L but The RPM's are getting lower on that one and I don't want to go to 24 in prop. Would like to stay in the 22 inch range and maybe 23.
Planning on a 12 cell setup or a 10 cell if it will supply sufficient power.

The other motor I can get at a resonable price at the moment is the AXI 5330/24.
It looks to be somewhat compareable. But doesn't say if it can do 12 cells.
Anyone have any experience with that line of motors in those sizes?

According to Model Motors website, the AXI 5330/24 is rated up to 10s and a max current draw of 65A.
The Hacker is also rated up to 10s but I know a lot of people running that motor on 12s with no problems.

Got two Hacker's. A60-16l on 12 cell w/ 24x12 in a Pilot 30% Yak and A60-18l on 12cell w/24x12 on a Pilot 30% 260. Both use CC 110HV speed controllers.
Yak has plenty of power, 260 will be maidened as soon as we dry out a bit here in S. Texas. Yak is about 18lbs 2oz RTF and the 260 is 17lbs 8oz RTF. So far about 15 or so flights on Yak and I'm very pleased.:198: You won't be dissappointed :197:

On the Hacker site under motor applications and they do list 12 cell setups. Like you mentioned my works great on them:198:

a 24x12 on the 16L ?? Wow, maybe I should go with the 14L. I would prefer to stay in the 22 to 23 inch prop range.

Just got my Hyperion meter in and I'll let you know watt and amps if you'd like. Planning on testing 10,11 and 12 cell setup on both motors and use Xoar 24x10,24x12 and APC 24x10 and 24x12 props. Only smaller one I have is a Xoar 23x8, I'll check it too.

The Xoar 23x8 is interesting. I have easy access to Xoar props here and don't really want to go bigger than 23 inch. If it means 23x12 so be it

I know, I know, I'm thinking like a gasser :211:

An electric motor can do any number of cells, as long as you stay below its maximum rpm (= Kv x voltage). And insulation break down voltage is at least 100Volt.
Watt figures can only be a veryveryvery coarse ball park figures.
Maximum current is the most important figure, although it depends on cooling.

The standard 50CC Hacker conversion is the A60-18L, 24x12 prop, and 12S-5000mAh batteries. With a CC110HV or a Jeti, you'll get about 4KW static. Of course this is way over the rating of the motor but the 3DHS guys have been using this setup for years with absolutely no probelms...

I have run my Hacker A60-18L for two years with no problems. About 500 flights. 12s 5000mah FlightPower batteries and an APC 24X12. I have a wall full of props that I'll sell cheap. I hate it, but the APC gives the best performance by a wide margin. I have XOAR, Mejlik, Menz, they all make noise but just don't deliver the thrust. Is there a prop clearance issue? If so I would go to taller gear. You won't regret it.

How's it going? I didn't know you messed with those big electrics. What are you flying the Hacker in? I might take you up on some of those props if you have anything in the 18" to 20" range.
We're just now getting into the bigger electrics. Justin has a new ride coming. Can't say much about it in the public forum, but it's going to be pretty cool. He'll get a little time on it before we take it to SEFF. It'll be a 2000 watt 8s set-up.
