WALMART CELL PHONE SERVICE

It seems that Walmart (http://www.lockergnome.com/blade/2009/10/14/walmarts-30-a-month-cell-no-contract-needed/) has been beta testing a phone system (http://www.lockergnome.com/blade/2009/10/14/walmarts-30-a-month-cell-no-contract-needed/) and is now ready to release it to the masses. Pricing seems encouraging in that for $30 a month you get 1,000 minutes of calling, 1,000 texts and 30 MB of mobile web access. For $45 a month you get unlimited calling (http://www.lockergnome.com/blade/2009/10/14/walmarts-30-a-month-cell-no-contract-needed/), texts and mobile web access. According to Walmart, this is nationwide service, which they describe as ‘reliable’.
In a recent article it states the follow information:
The average U.S. adult spends $78 on his or her cell phone (http://www.lockergnome.com/blade/2009/10/14/walmarts-30-a-month-cell-no-contract-needed/) bill to receive 1,000 minutes a month.* By switching to the $30 Straight Talk plan, for example, the average 1,000 minutes-per-month consumer could save more than $500 per year and still be on a reliable nationwide network.
To help drive down no-contract wireless pricing for customers, Walmart will launch Straight Talk providing customers the following two options:
· Straight Talk “All You Need” 30-day Plan that includes the following for only $30 a month:
o 1,000 minutes, 1,000 texts and 30MB of mobile web access
o Nationwide coverage
o 411 Information calls at no extra charge
· Straight Talk’s Unlimited 30-day Plan that includes the following for $45 a month:
o Unlimited minutes, unlimited text and unlimited mobile web access
o Nationwide coverage
o Unlimited 411 Information calls at no extra charge
“It has been very encouraging to see the excitement and response to the Straight Talk pilot in 234 stores that began last summer at Walmart,” said Greg Hall, vice president of Media Services, Walmart U.S. “In light of the savings customers continue to need, we have worked very quickly to extend this offering to all of our Walmart customers nationwide, and just before the holidays.”
Consumers may refill their monthly balances by buying refill cards at Walmart, or by registering online at www.Walmart.com (http://www.walmart.com/) or www.StraightTalk.com (http://www.straighttalk.com/). Also available at Walmart are a range of Straight Talk phone products to suit different needs, from the entry-level LG 220 flip phone at $39.98, to the LG Slider 290 at $79.98 to the Samsung 451 QWERTY keyboard phone at $99.88.

Down here in NC we have Cricket wireless, 30 bucks a month unlimited voice, 45 buck for unlimited voice and text, my wife and I will have these once our contract with AT+T runs out in march.

I have Cricket here too. Everywhere in fact. Can't go anywhere without passing a store.

But I'm fairly sure that it is NOT nationwide service. LocaL only.

Right now I spend $60 a month for two phones and since just about everyone I call uses the same service I bank more rollover minutes than I will ever use. Keep the text. Never could understand what it is for unless one is trying to cheat on a test in school !!

I guess there is the thing that if ya wanted to tell someone off and NOT talk to them text is good for that too. But why ? It takes so much MORE of your time to type it out when you could just straight talk to them OR leave a voice mail that is more detailed.

Cell phones use towers. The only phones that use satellites are the reallllly expensive ones that mountain climbers and other people who spend time in remote areas use:198:. Looks like a good deal...if it works where you need it too. Maybe having walmart in the mix will help keep the big companies honest(I work for one:195:).

I'm on Metro Pcs and pay $46.72 a month for unlimited talk/text/web. Boost Mobile is $50 for unlimited talk/text/web. Wallmart is just trying to get a pice of the action. What there offering is nothing special in my opion. Wallmart is the largest retail chain in the world. A perfect reason not to use there cell phone service. :208:

I'm at $150/month and would love to have lower price BUT I am very wary of service areas covered... Verizon has the largest , I think , and any new service provider would have to match that or I couldn't go for it because of my business . If I were to try some new service and it ended up w/ lots of dropped calls that would be not good for me...

Verizon and Sprint are the largest as far as coverage. I drive trucks for a living cross country and local. I have been using Sprint for about 8 - 10 years when I finally thought about this. I always have a company phone with me plus a qualquam and cb in the truck. Why pay $100 for unlimited on Sprint. If I can't call home for a day or two it won’t kill me. I could always use the company phone once in a while and say my phone was not charged. I guess it depends on the circumstances. Metro Pcs, Boost Mobile, and some of these other company’s do have limited coverage zones as I have seen by there maps on the websites.

This thing is definitely for real. They can even truncate your existing number. No contracts...no overages...just 2 types of flat costs. And, I was told they use Verizon's towers. That's very good news to me.
