View Full Version : 4.8V ignition - can I use a 5V regulator ?

I just purchased a Rotomotor 25 engine and the included ignition says that it works with 4.8V.

In all my planes I use Fromeco batteries with regulators for different applications and I want to use a 2.600 - 7.2 battery for the ignition. The idea is to run it through a regulator that will send 5 V in a constant way to the ignition.

When you charge a 4.8V battery to full capacity, you have more than 4.8V for several minutes and ignitions dont have a problem, but I'm not sure if a constant 5V could be a problem.

What do you guys think ? It is such a smal difference that it shouldn't be a problem or should I just go with a normal 4.8V battery to avoid problems ? The reaason for going with a biggger battery is for standarization of my fleet. In that way I don't have to remember in which planes I have different kinds of batteries.

Freshly charged 4 cell NiMh will show 5,6 volts, so you can easilly use 5v regulator!
5-5,1 usually is the voltage to stop flying :) or atleast watch voltcheck

Should be fine regulated at 5 volts, a freshly charged 4.8 volts stays above 5 volts for more than few minutes.

If in real doubt call the manufacturer. Get it in writing so the warranty is still good.

Guys...... I followed your advice and run the ignition with the 5V regulator. No problems at all.....

The Rotomor 25 is a really nice engine..... very quiet. I installed it in my RV-4 which was equipped before with a Saito 150 because I got tired of glow fuel. Plenty of power and you can't realy notice the extra weight of the engine and an additional battery.

Thanks guys.

This is how the plane was looking when it was equipped with The Saito 150. I don't have pictures of the plane with the Roto 25 yet......
