| Bad-ass Super Contributer! ![]() | I am designing a 50cc plane for this/next year project and would like some feedback. I will be using an Eppler 169 for the wing airfoil, but what should I use for the stabs and why?? I was thinking about NACA 0009. And also where can I get it (I've got the Eppler one) in a CAD compatible version (dxf or dwg). Another question for 50cc plane owners. What thickness do you have at the leading edge of the rudder? |

| Bad-ass Super Contributer! ![]() | 8020 is a good one, NACA 0009 is probably most common.. you can barely see any diff between the 2, and would have to cut and sand them perfectly to get any aerodynamic advantage as well, which is hard to do ![]() |

| Uber Contributer ![]() | the common stabs airfoil are fully symetric, this works good when you have a symetric wing airfoil also since symetric airfoils do not produce moment in zero angle of attack. if you wish to use Eppler 169 for the wing airfoil you should ask yourself what will be the speed that most of the time the airplane will fly in,than sum all the aerodynamic moments and find out what stab profile will zero the moments on the airplane when mounted with zero angle of attack so drag is minimal or in other words-the plane will be trimmed.(this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of wing section selection so dont catch me with that as a simple solution for all airplanes-there no such thing) the easy and simple way is to take symmetric airfoil, any of the NACA 4digit will be fine. most prefer a airfoil section rather than flat plate since it prouduce less drag an is easy to built o be very strong, flat stabs will have to be thick or reinforced with wires ,there are full scale airplanes with flat plate stabs (all of the pitts spacial airplanes family for example). if this subject intrests you you can check out the book "Aircraft Design: A Conceptual Approach" by daniel raymer, this is the BEST book for any airplane lovers that will give you answers on most common issues regarding airplane design. good luck Yonatan Segev Last edited by yonatan : 02-04-2008 at 02:22 PM. |
