Default Bill Hemple stall turn... how to???

I know it is simple, but I can't seem to get it down. I do not know what the move is really called. I just know I think it looks like one of the neatest ways to redirect for a downline. I would love to know what he does with the power through the whole thing and also what stick movements he uses. Thanks... Here's a clip..

Just from watching in slow-mo, it looks like a 1 rev knife edge spin entered from an upline followed by a hammerhead/tumble to the left... I'm guessing, enter from an upline, hammer full left rudder and down elevator. Modulate the throttle and ails to keep it in the rotation. Release down elevator and push through the hammerhead......

That is an awesome maneuver!

Thanks, Yeah, it is simple, but it looks great. Like a Blender, it's quite simple, but a real dazzler... same approach, but a little more complex.

Keith, pull vert then (while you still have plenty of speed) nail the top right (or left) corners of the transmitter. As the plane comes around the top (and it will!) neutralize everything but rudder . Bill was rippin' it up that year at the TOC. He gave that Edge both barrels and a bit more. Bill ain't skeert!!

I can tell you how it had to be flown in my full size Pitts S1. lots of power, hard pull to the virtical while using right rudder to stop yaw in the pull, once vertical a small push to hold the line keeping the heading straight with rudder and a little right aileron to stop torquing and wait for the airspeed to go to near zero and then kick full left rudder and pivot over still using right aileron. The aircraft should do this pivot on the wing tip, not fly over the top. Fly the vertical down line the same length and pull hard to level. Or mix up a half roll or what ever makes you feel good.

Acro is the most fun you can have with your cloths on.

Looks like more to it than that. Looks like it starts out as a positive snap to the left, for just a nanosecond. You see him blip some up elevator right at the beginning, then lets off, followed by full left rudder and left aileron. It looks like rudder first, then aileron. Then, almost at the same time, he feeds full down and gets rid of most of the aileron, and starts the gyration - he's probably around 1/2-3/4 throttle (guessing). Once he is ready to finish, I can only assume he is removing some of the throttle, while feeding in left aileron a bit to finish the rotation, and applying up elevator as needed to point the plane down, while also neutralizing the rest of the controls and finally releasing elevator once the plane is pointed where he wants it...does look pretty cool!

That is a really nice manuver - very innovative. That thing has a perfect KE spin going up for 1 full revolution... I think maybe the weight of the 50%er with all that momentum helps that. I'm gonna go through it frame by frame and then see if I can figure it out in the sim.

Thanks for posting the video!

Jason, you say left, left and down....meaning both sticks left and down elevator? Thanks for the input guys. I appreciate it.

Jason is correct. But then again he had about 25 hours flying that plane!

I started with the upline with a lot of airspeed, left positive snap-up elevator, as soon as it breaks (almost a full 1/4 rotation) into the snap apply full down elevator! Rudder stays full left all the way through. Throttle stays at MAX all the way through into the downline! The engine at full helps the hammer head to the left, it also helps the pirouetting turn at the top. This is a really cool manuever and a MUST SEE in person.
I have a few 50% Edge 540 ARF's in stock for all those interested in owning a plane that does it well!!
