Default Not taken seriously!?

Hey,
I love flying! I love everything about it, from 3D to pattern to full scale ! I like to show other people that i love flying to! Thing is, im in high school and whenever people ask me what i like to do i say: "well, i fly" and then its this long story , and in the end it looks like im a "geek" or "loser"! The only people who take me seriously are my friends, and my ice-hockey team! Does this happen to any of you high school students too? And what do you do about it? I dont mind people laughing at me saying i fly toy planes and stuff, but I was just wondering if this happens to you guys too! I take pride in flying, and will never lose my love for it, no matter what people tell me! Just wanted to know if this happens to you too!?
Best regards,
nick

Join the club. There were tons of people at my hight school that thought flying was lame, even the fullscale stuff, because I really was a lot more involved in fullscale in high school. After I graduated, everyone thought it was the coolest thing in the world, it's pretty wierd. My friends all thougt it was awesome, but there were those peckerheads that thought otherwise. Just take it in stride, what does their opinion really matter anyway, right?

When i tell people that i fly rc planes, they picture the "toy" planes, like 2 foot wingspan tops. then i tell them the size of my yak, and they are interested instantly. If i'm near a computer i hop on FG and play a vid or 2, and their comments go from "toy planes are gay" to "dude, how much does it cost, i wanna get started in this!"

I have been dealing with this very issue since 1978 dude. Your age will make no difference.
This hobby / sport has always been judged as the "model" example of boys with toys.

You won't change the crowd - but you can set some 'positive' buzz in your circles by inviting the right ones out for a fun fly event. When you know there will be a good representation of the hobby - scale , speed, beginner & GIANT!!! and allot of flying. Hopefully a club trainer with a buddy box to give em a hand at it.

Only now that I have been flying really BIG toy airplanes ( I call them remote control aircraft- not airplanes) do I sense a waning of distane or humph! - type reactions. I say when i take off - its as if I'm teeing off with the whole golf bag - including graphite sticks - and it may not come back! There is no other equal to the experience of a maiden flight where weeks / months of effort and couple K of bucks are on the line!
We are a respectable and gut wrenching ballsey group of fun seekers!

Yah, its fun telling people that I fly RC airplanes.....then they normally ask "how big is it, 5 foot wingspan?" When I tell them that it is over 10 foot with a 150cc engine and weighs 40 lbs they are normally shocked. Then they say "Really?"

I fly for me and enjoy every time I go out.

Blue Skies!!!

Ya they think its all cool till you tell them the cost, then they look at you all strange again. My non RC friends call me a nerd and a geek and I agree with them. I am the first one to call myself a nerd, but it is way to much fun flying rc planes for me to care it I am a nerd. Plus I am 33 with shot knees so names don't matter to me anymore.

The people at my school when I tell them that I fly are the same as well. They then they ask the usual how far, how high, can it crash, only my friends take me seriously too its the same everywhere I think.

Yes it is the same here. I tell them I fly, they ask all kinds of questions (just as anyone would) then they say well thats pretty lame or whatever and then I show them pictures or vids ect. and most change their minds. I love this too much to be cared about what I am called though! Nothing someone says is going to make me stop!!

At my school it is like why do you fly them they just fly in circles. Then I show them videos and they say this is gay and stupid to spend that much money on it. They never see the fun of it. Too me flying airplanes is WAY better than sitting down playing video games. Then there are people that are like airplanes arnt suppose to do that why dont you get a scale model like a p51 or a jet. Then I am like that isnt my type of flying. And please dont try to explain to them 3D lol. Also if you do a demo at your school dont bother hovering on the deck and doing moves on the deck. They just want to see how high and fast it will go. I just wish more people understood this hobby.
