Introduction

used the AeroPerfect meter to assist in setting up Mark Leseberg's Tucson Shootout winning Dalton Extra 300. This plane was also flown at the 2006 Don Lowe Masters.

When we test flew the plane it needed one click of right aileron and that was it. It's nice to be able to go to the field and fly and not have to work on the setup. The AeroPerfect meter makes this possible by being accurate to within 0.05 degrees.

When first using the unit I found that when I rotated the meter 180° that it appeared to be off by .30 of a degree. I contacted the manufacture and Marl explained that the same side of the meter needs to face forward when making comparative measurements. To make sure of this, I put a piece of tape across the front and marked front on it. The insignia on the MU-1800-I makes a good reference point as well. This will give you consistent readings from the left and right sides of the plane. It turns out that when I had turned the measuring unit 180°, the meter revealed that the table was sloping 0.15°.

Product Performance

To operate the unit, simply plug it into a 110VAC outlet and turn it on by pressing the power button on the LCD display. The LCD is attached to the MU-1800-I (measuring unit) with a 6 foot cord. One nice feature of the AeroPerfect meter is that your fuselage can be at any angle. Simply place the MU-1800-I on the datum line (the top longeron on most built up planes) and press reset. The meter will now read 0°degrees and will give you a point of reference from which everything else can be measured. There is no need to get the fuselage level as with other bubble type incidence meters. As long as your fuselage doesn't move you can set your wings and stab at this same angle.

To set control throws just clamp the unit on with the supplied clamps. You can now set up the neutral point on your elevators and get them both traveling the same amount. The instructions in most airplanes have recommended control throws in inches or millimeters. You can get a conversion table by visiting www.AeroPerfect.com to convert these measurements to degrees.

Conclusion

The AeroPerfect digital throw meter is a very useful tool to have around the shop, and for the perfectionist, it's a must have on the bench. I have been using it for a few months now, and as a professional custom builder, and it has become one of the most versatile tools that I own. I even used it to build some new building tables that I wanted to be perfectly level. It's simple to use and gives very consistent and accurate readings every time.
