Default Dual Receiver's on 2.4 GHz

I have a question for anyone in the know about setting up a model with dual receivers using a Spectrum DX-7. Can it be done?

Just yesterday I test flew a model for someone at my local field and he was using a Spectrum DX-7. Upon looking at it I realised it looked exactly the same as my JR 378, in fact it was the very same case and all but one of the switches were the same.

I've been pondering with the idea of changing over to 2.4GHz for a little while and after having had a play with a DX-7 and finding it to be very similar to the radio I already have it's probably time to make the transition.

The issue I have is that I'm a firm believer in having a bit of 'back up' and something that gives me great peace of mind when sending my models into the air is having a second receiver, should the unthinkable occur and one receiver pack up mid flight. This was never an issue with the smaller planes, however I now fly big and have a bit more money invested therefore I little back up puts my mind at ease once the wheels leave the runway.

The way I have my plane set up at the moment is I have the model completely split down the middle so I still have the ability to control one side should the other decide to stop working. Works well in theory and know of one fellow IMAC pilot who had this same set up save his 40% Extra.

Is this still possible with 2.4GHz?

I'm not sure about dual recievers, but at Bendigo there was a 3.3M comp arf yak being flown with a DX7 radio (Shayne Lysaght).

I can't really see why you couldn't use them for a big bird. I know at the moment they don't offer a huge amount of functionality like the top end transmitters, but hey, if it's going to eliminate the chance of being shot down then I'm happy to make the sacrifice.

What system was Shayne Lysaght using for power distribution?

Not 100% certain, but I think he has an emotec power system in there (must have looked at it 50 times on the weekend but my brains a bit fried, need more sleep!).

You do it the exact same way with 2.4... just bind both RX,s to the TX

Unhappy Re: Dual Receiver's on 2.4 GHz

I checked with Horizon Hobby about the same thing, because I wanted to do it, and they said that you cannot run dual receivers on a DX-7

I hope this isn't true, I have two AR7000's in my Carden 330...just bind both recievers at the same time

If it can't be done, we better not tell my planes. I've flown my Cap on dual AR7000s, and now have them in my Edge. There's been numerous posts from people running the same setup, and Paul Beard (the man who developed Spektrum) even said it works fine.

Glad to hear it can be done. I was just going by what they said. Binding both receivers at the same time is all it takes to make it work? That's good news. Why would they say no if it can be done?

I think you talked to someone who didn't know what he was talking about. Over on RCU and RCG, Paul Beard said that they were fine, and so did one of the support reps from Horizon. You don't even need to bind them at the same time, you can bind one, shut it all off, then bind the other if you want. I just find it easier to put bind plugs in both receivers and do it simultaneously.
