Default Project....NEED HELP

Hey guys, i need a hand. Im sitting in sci class right now and we were just handed a project about aerodynamics. i thought cool. so since im no full scale pilot yet or a master builder i thought i would ask the experts what to put in this project. so anything you guys can come up would be hlepful.

Thanks,
Ice

If its an experiment you need to do then you should build some balsa gliders, and figure out how the distance they can glide changes as you move the CG fore and aft. Then discuss why it changes.

If it's a just a paper research report, the possibilities are endless. It depends on what you're interested in.

Don't worry... If I'm on internet at work... then I figure it's OK for you to be on internet at school

Guess I'm old "school"

and probably jealous... because Al Gore hadn't invented the WWW yet when I was in school!

Yeah... and when I was in highschool, the only thing on the WWW was the script to Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and the Anarchist's Cookbook :P

For some people the internet IS school. My university does absolutely nothing with paper anymore, not even billing statements. And this is a regular old campus not the online type.

The CG is a good idea. How elaborate is this project supposed to be and what kind of resources do you have to put toward it? If its a big thing a lot of times you can get grants to pay for portions of your work.

Or back to the simple balsa gliders: Make several flat wings of the exact same area but distribute it out differently. This is called the Aspect Ratio. A long thin wing (High) and a short fat wing (low aspect ratio) may have identical areas but perform very differently. I'll let you go figure out why. You could do some really cool physical tests and then discuss the different types of drag and why each airfoil is ideal for certain environments. Make sure the CG remains the same for each glider in this experiment otherwise you have too many variables being changed.

There are several good books for resources on model aircraft design. Andy Lennon's "model aircraft design" is a very good book but you need to read it all thoroughly because he skips around a little (mentions "B" and "C" before explaining "A" etc). There is also another good book out there (among others) but I'm blanking on the author.

Well to start with i was on the internet to find information on aerodynamics. not that i don't know anything but its good to check the info with the pros. also i asked her what she wanted on the project i said "do u want me to explain lift?? or talk about CG" she said just explain aerodynamics. so i did figure on doing something about CG and Lift. but i wasn't sure if that was enough or in there is something bigger i can do. also its just like a poster project with articles on it and a little report to go along with it.

Thanks,
Ice

use a side view of a wing, some smoke in a jet nozzle and a fan to show lift and angles of attack

Smile Re: Project....NEED HELP

hey alax cg is aircraft specific it deals with characteristics not aerodynamics so much but what you can do that might impress her just use the G3 airfoil charts and show lift/drag coefficients and that would make her happy

be like "this one has more lift because of..." and then go off with it

oh btw sorry you came online yesterday and when i got back you were already off i was too late to get a message in sorry

but ya online just google like "NACA0019" or something around that or just "airfoil cutaway" something cool like that she'd appreciate

who do you have laskosky?

i waited all year for that project and now when you finally do it im not at that school anymore

^^i said a few bad words when i found out hahahaha

anyway have fun with it
