Good luck on the ride. I just got my ticket last fall and the test is not too bad. Just remember to only answer what you need to, and don't give out any extra info. If you open the door on a subject they'll start asking you about it. For the ride itself just take your time and think it through before you act the're in no hurry and you don't need to be either. Just remember your clearing turns before every maneuver and enjoy cuz it's a great feeling when you pass!!!

One or three more tips... If you don't know the answer, SAY SO! And then tell the examiner that you'd like to look it up in the FAR/AIM... this is what they want to hear. They don't want to here a bunch of made up malarky! There is NOTHING wrong with looking it up in the FAR/AIM. During my CFI checkride, there were several questions that I looked up in the FARs. Most importantly, go in with a positive attitude, willing to learn. All of my checkrides were learning experiences. The examiners will really pick up on the fact that you want to learn. Good luck and check those gas caps! -Matt |

Knowing how to use the FAR/AIM is good like krashmaster says, my examiner told me that when he found an area I was weak on he wanted to see that I admitted I didn't know and that I knew how to find the info, I think that was as important to him as actually answering a question correctly. They know you won't / don't know everything there just trying to make sure that your going to be a safe pilot.

I just got mine last month. just try not to think about it to much before the oral and flight, that is what gets you nervous. Do all your studying and remember all the PTS standards and go in with a positive attitude and have fun thats all you need to do. Its no different than flying with your instructor, all the maneuvers are the same and they dont fling you trick questions. Just watch out for little things though. My examiner undid a screw on the cowling while I was preflighting the tail section, and they like to not put their seat belts on until you tell them to, and keep the window open unless you brief them to close it before takeoff. Also, if you happen to screw up a maneuver or your just not happy with the way it went, just ask them for another try. 9 times out of 10 they wont have a problem with it, unless you start doing EVERYTHING twice. Another thing, if you do happen to blow PTS (which you shouldn't anyways) dont give up, correct for what you did. If your examiner sees you 125 below your assigned altitude on a steep turn dont just keep it there, correct for it immediately, they like to see that and will pass you on the maneuver even though you were out of PTS for a second. Good luck man, just stay calm and know your stuff...passing is the best feeling in the world

Make sure you check all of your VOR freqs. My examiner kept fiddling with my radios and changed a setting on purpose so I got a 180 out zero on the OBS and I went the wrong way on "Lost recovery" Be the PIC and tell him to leave your radios alone if he has diddle fingers. I did not think that an examiner would delibrately trick someone, but, they are people too and some of them are red asses. I guess he needed the $300.00 retest fee. I could not prove that is what happened, but we both knew. Good luck You'll make it! |
