Default Jets and safety... am I the only guy???

I love all airplanes. I love 3D. I love them all. However, I just watched David Shulman's go in at the Nall. That is what I am talking about. I know they have capped them at 200mph. I know a 40% with a 150cc motor is not exactly a foamie, but... the fire, the 200 mph missile... get my drift? I just sat and watched that vid and that is why I don't like flying when they are in the air. I am not being paranoid here, but they are seriously a semi-controlled missile! Who else here is slightly afraid of spectation of the jets?

Gremlin,

Bogan burnt a 40% Comp to the ground before the last Tucson Shootout. Jason burnt one at the last TOC.

Kerosene, gas, glow, heck even LiPO packs are down right easy to ignite. Ever seen how many cars burn to the ground with LiPo's going off in them. Lets say it way more then the number of jets that go out with a ball of flame.

Its all relative mate.

Riding a bike is dangerous.

Personally,
I never fly when jets are in the air. I am scared, and they are just too fast for me. I like seeing them fly, i just have to be mobile and ready to take a leep to the left or right.
Then again as Kiwi said, Everything is relative. The chance of you dying in a car crash on your way home from the field is way higher than a jet killing you!
just my opinion.

I have thought the same as well. I love seeing Jets go tearing down the runway. I just get a little concerned when there are lots of guys in the pits when one comes down for a pass. Something that helps me ease my mind is the fact that I believe (assumption, but I hope its true) that Jet pilots use the absolute best of everything when it comes to assembling a jet, and therefore mechanical failures are somewhat rare. That said, lockouts still happen. I dont want to even think if one came through the pits at high speed. I have had the same thought before with warbirds doing high speed passes down the runway as well, some type of mechanical failure could cause a situation where the airplane came through the pits at high speed. Luckily, the cases we hear about are rare. Thankfully!

Ive seen just about everything come thru the pits.. Honestly the thing that scares me more than jets is a 40-120 size plane with a gentlemen that should not be flying cuz he or they have the tendency to fly where ever the hell they want including buzzzing the pits the parking lot the trash inclosure the entry road the park down the street and finally a nice resting spot some place that will take hours to find.. The worst part is it doesnt take 7-10 grand to do all that damage you can do all that and more for less than 300.00 bucks. If you think for a second you are safe at any event or any flying field you are NUTS!! keep your eyes open and a safe place to hide at all times.. A trainer or a 200 mph hour jet runs into you either way your DEAD!!

Maybe it is just the smoke and mirrors, but a jet not only is traveling twice or more speed than a 40%, but the motor itself is a huge projectile and not even to mention the 3rd degree burns from the fireball! I know taking a shower can be dangerous, but think about it.... If you have not seen the crash I refer to... you need to. I think it should be an eye opener..

I like helis and I mean no disrespect to heli guys, but personally, they freak me out more than everything else.

Yeah, especially when helis crash! They keep bouncing around and going crazy throwing up dirt and pieces of debris!

My quote from the down in flames thread. IMO I think this is starting to sound like warbird guys complaining about 3D. I'd say give 'em a break. This hobby is dangerous on many levels, and it's our job as modelers to use visuals like this video as an opportunity to re-focus on safety, which is paramount to the future of modeling.

Quote:
take into consideration that the Jet Crowd are our brother modelers. Accidents and crashes happen all the time, and in each one, there is something to be learned. I witnessed this crash personally, and albeit spectacular, at the end of the day, IMO, it was another model airplane crash. "What if's" can go on ad infinitum and, IMO, are completely irrelevant and only damage modeling as a whole. Jet guys are our modeling comrades; if we give persecute them, we become the people we despise the most. Think about it.

What if's can be taken many ways. My what if's are more of a preventative thought, rather than a negative one. Typing is black and white. It was just an observation. I know they are modelers as well and I respect that.

I hope no one will take this the wrong way. They freak me out but they belong alongside fixed wing, warbirds, jets, aerobats, gliders, parkflyers, and circle flyers. There are a bunch of new guys at the field all flying helis. I am glad they are there and having fun.
The jet crash is scary but no one hurt, the 2 people in budapest however were not so lucky. These things can hurt , maim, injure, kill but the most dangerous thing you can ever do in this hobby is drive your vehicle to the field.
