I love taking pictures. I do not love the hassle of the old style film etc. I would love to own a nice camera in the 7+ mp range. I do not need to spend $2000 either. What I am looking for is a camera that can take decent pics with a decent mp so I can blow them up a little bit. I have no idea where to start looking. Also, another thing, the amount of time my Sony 3.8 mp takes to capture a shot is just lazy. The moment is gone often times by the time it takes it. Thanks gents. Keith

Keith, I 've been researching this as well. YOU want a SLR camera. Canon, Pentax, Nikon and Fuji all make them from 6mp - 12+ mp. You can get a good 8mp with a good lens for around $700. Canon has the Rebal, Nikon has the D40 and the D80.. many many choices. Good luck.. I've been starting the research for about 3 weeks now... Lots of choices! But since my Panzl bit it.. I may put off this purchase for a spell

What does SLR stand for? Yeah, that's what it looks like, something in that class... A lot of cam for the money I think...

We bought a Canon Digital Rebel XTi last year when it was on sale at Best Buy- great camera. Before that we had a couple of Sony Cybershots- we weren't pleased. Too many blurry images and, like you say, it seemingly took forever for the camera to actually take the picture. Yes, the SLRs are $700-$1000 and up- but the Cybershots were half that- my advice is if you want to do anything with the pictures get one of the SLRs. Now- keep in mind that getting into cameras is like any other hobby- next thing you know you are going to want a better lens and a better.....well you get the point..... and lenses can cost more than the camera themselves. Thanks guys... keep the suggestions coming. I have taken some very nice pics with the old Slobershot Sony! If you are taking pics of a mountain, you are ok. Better hope the mountain does not move, otherwise, blurry and you missed the shot...LOL Thanks.

Will the SLR's take a nice pics at speed (moving airplanes/cars)? What are they really limited by? Thanks.

SLR's can do between 2 and 4+ pictures per second. So you can do insane action shots. Very bad ass cameras. SLR = Single Lens Response (I think) But to me SLR = very very fast "reload" for the next shot. I mean I think the D40 is like 2.8 shots a second... thats fast!! (I sure there are $6000 camers that can do 20 shots a sec... but for a mere mortal.. i think 2 - 4 shots a sec is good.)

SLR stands for single lense reflex. The new digital versions are usually referred to as DSLR's. Theres actually a little mirror that flips up and down. dmichael is absolutely correct about the new hobby thing!

For what its worth, the forum gossip (but you know how that is) seems to be quite unimpressed with the D40 as compared to the other Nikon SLR's. The D80 gets better reviews is full featured but is $200 more.
