Video! STOL Competition

To my understanding, this is from a STOL competition in Alaska. Pretty cool, they really can land and take off in no space at all!

Yep, Cracky is right, Short Take Off and Landing.
I took a ride in a full scale Maule a little while back. Man was that impressive, we were off the ground big time quick.

that's a pretty sweet vid! i believe that cub is the new carbon cub from www.cubcrafters.com http://cubcrafters.com/news_item.aspx?id=103 it's pretty BA! However, maules and cubs are for little girls. This is a real STOL aircraft that actually caries a payload. ;-)

I used to fly a STOL 206 for a skydive operation.

It would get 6 divers (with chutes), myself, and half tanks of fuel off of a 1,600ft grass runway.

Even better than that was the Pilatus Porter.
750 Hp turbine taildragger that would get 10 divers plus me and a bunch of gear off the ground in 1/3 the takeoff roll of the 206 (about 250-300 ft takeoff).

Pic of a porter.

My uncle used to fly a Maule, I don't know the different models or configs but I remember him saying it was a newer one with the bigger engine. He took me flying in it once, it was really cool. When we taxiied onto the runway, he put the mains on the threshold line and said,'think I can make it off before we hit the numbers?' I didn't think so, from threshold to the degree number was only about 20 feet, but sure enough he did it! Stood on the brakes, full flaps/throttle, got the tail up and let the brakes go...man, it felt like i could get out and run faster than the plane was moving. Just goes to show how remarkable modern aircraft have become
