Hey guys, I'm contimplating giving up my planes, even though I don't want to, and am wondering what you guys think. All I have are foamies, anjd the biggest plane I have is my Airfoilz Edge. The KM in my avatar fell apart in a snap roll. I compete indoors each winter, and have fun with it, and would like to compete in the summer outdoors in IMAC, just don't have a plane for it. I've thought about entering my Edge in a contest in basic, but have pretty much been told I'd be laughed at for flying a foamy. I hate how everytime I go to a flying field, I'm the best pilot there, but have the worst planes. My parents don't support me in the hobby at all, except going with me to fly ins in the winter. Right now I'm just kinda bummed, and wanting to compete against anybody again without waiting until the indoor season rolls around. I have a new job and am going to be making good money this summer, but my parents won't let me spend any more on anything new for my RC stuff, and won't ever let me get a glow or gas plane. I'm wanting to get farther into the hobby, but can't. So I'm thinking about just giving it up. It's fun, but is a money pit considering my parents expect me to have saved enough to pay cash for a new car in a year (yeah right ). Selling my planes would help me get some money though for a car. Anyone have any thoughts or advice for me? I'm in a pickel about what to do.

Man thats a tough one. On the one hand a new car would help out with the ladies AND its a good thing to have in college, if you going that rout. On the other hand, who need ladies when you have a sweet IMAC ship to kick ASS wi... Wait, what am I SAYING! Think of the WOMEN! Ok seriously. Your a good pilot right? You probably only need 2 airplanes. Myself I have 1 foamy and an Inspire Mini. No more new airplanes for me until I can get into IMAC. Work the summer and save every dime you can. Take lunch to work, hitch a ride with your parents, whatever it takes. Save your money until summer is over. Then you can decide what to do. |

I had a friend fly a fliton in basic last year in the wind at Vegas........lots of guys laughed at him........then he laughed all the way to 1st place. The plane does not make the pilot......the pilot makes the plane! |

Alright guys, I've decided I won't sell everything. I'm still thinking about competing next Saturday. I'm just afraid of pissing someone with a real plane off if I wind up beating them with a foamy. Any thoughts?

RYguy, Since you are 17, I assume that you still live with your parents. Since that is so, you need to comply with their rules, regulations, etc. Wait until you are 18 and done with high school to make your own decisions. Believe me, your parents DO know more than you do. In life, when you honor your parents,(and those in charge for that matter) other folks take notice and will have a favorable opinion of you. You never know how this will matter until you get a break because of it. I can tell you one thing, my parents never bought anything for me. I always flew the "worst planes" at the flying field. Guess what dude, the fact that I love this hobby with a passion and flew every chance I got made me a better pilot. I did my first torq roll with a Telemaster trainer! Last year, I flew a Funtana that had the nose of one and the rest of another. Guess what, I flew the heck out of it. We sortta had a who can get the lowest contest. I tailtouched before anyone else.(and they were flying much better planes) Life isn't fair, but you have to take it as you get it. What's most important in you life? Friends, RC planes, girls, cars, school, parents, etc? The one thing that I see as being important in life is school. If you don't have the education, you aren't going to get anywhere other than the MickeyD's down the street. Your top priority needs to be honoring your parents followed closely by school. Where are you going to take your life? You can always buy planes and compete with "real" planes later. When I was 17, I couldn't have imagined that I would be where I am. I have an awesome job, college paid, friends, a car, and I'm getting together a 55% plane.(well, it'll be a while 'till I can get it done) None of this was paid for by my parents. My parents did nothing to benefit me here except for grade school, and life skills.(no money, not even an allowance) As far as competing with a foamie in IMAC, I wish you all the best. And if anyone laughs, just fly all the harder and see who's laughing in the end. Have a great day! 50% Last edited by 50%plane; 06-05-2007 at 08:32 PM. | ||||||||||||||||||

IMAC isn't always about winning. ........with a foamy you can fly closer and smaller manuevers. Fly what you got.....see how you do. At worst you learn how to fly precision

Honor your parents no matter how hard it seems at this time in your life, when you are older like I am you will look back and thank God for them. It may seem like they are not supporting you in the things you really want to do right now but look at the big picture of life. Soon you will be thru school and on your own and when you get there if you have a good education and job then you can fly whatever you want, in the meantime fly what you have and compete whenever you can who knows maybe you can even sharpen your skills and become good enough to be a sponsered pilot someday (don't base everything on that however). Take if from someone who has been down the road of life and knows where you are now for at one time I was there also. Take care and God Bless

I always hear the same story from the young guys. When I look at their inventory I am blown away with what they have. Add it all up and I bet you would have enough plus some to get the plane of your dreams and a little aside for that new car. Sell off all the junk and get one nice plane. Maybe at the worst have one smaller backup. I have literally seen a guy at my feild who says he can never afford a big gasser; and his parents wouldn't let him any way. Course every sunday he shows up with over a dozen small electrics. With what goes into a small electrics we figure he shows up with no less than $6000.00 worth. Consolidate! My 2 cents |

Perhaps you should be thankful for the things you do have. Yes it's a cliché but it holds alot of water. Another cliché that holds true is where there is a will there is a way. With this said, pack up the foamy and go out with the attitude that you will be a part of the event. There are a ton of things that need to be done at any IMAC event. Scribing will teach you as much as flying. Ask one of your parents to come at least for a while. If they see you becoming a part of the event in a volunteer role it may go a long way. I for one, applaud your parents for not letting you have what you want, this is how life is. You have many years ahead of you, trust me, if I just packed it in because I couldn't have what I wanted, when I wanted it, I would live a sorry life indeed.

Keep your favorite model with enough batteries to fly it. Sell off all the rest, batteries included. Part the stuff out if need be, Take a hit with some of the sales, but get rid of it all except the one. do like what was said above, and save every dime possible. "Sacifice Dude!" First, and formost, this will impress the hell out of your parents. Here is one way to help get through sacifice. Anytime you feel the erge to spend any, or all your savings, just remind yourself how much you want that giant scale gasser to compete in IMAC with. Keep a pic of a cool model in your wallet. Here is another tip. While your saving, keep looking for -local- deals here on the forums, good buys that included everything. Turn key. I have seen some nice 40% Cap 232's here and there that are absolutely cheery selling cheap. You can do it. Make it a goal, a mission! Just remember you'll need a vehicle to tranport the thing. Keep you eyes peeled for the clunker van/ or truck, but be careful buy the good clunker.

Consolidate, well said Highlights. Flying fewer, better setup, airplanes is the way to go. Foamies tend to get trashed and they don't really keep their 'tune' for very long. A good balsa ship like the Inspire Mini or one of the new .30 sized electrics will deal with about 10mph of wind in competent hands and still look smooth. If your a good pilot you wont crash it doing IMAC type flying. Wind is a big deal. IMAC contests go on even if the wind is 20mph. Foamies don't like that at all! You can't be smooth with an airplane like that in the wind. On a calm day (wind < 5mph) a properly setup Inspire Mini has a fair shot at the basic or sportsman sequences. Then its all up to the pilot. |
