Actually a not to well known factoid about Phillips head screws!!!

There are two different types, most times you get away with it using the wrong one but there is a Japanese standard, JIS I think it is and the more common SAE as we know it.

The real difference just so happens to be in those servo screw heads. Those pesky little buggers are more often than not the JAP standard.

Hey - Phillips head screws were "invented" in Portland, Oregon. The "blade or slot" style was pretty much it before that & if it wasn't for mass production, they might not have taken off. Workers trying to spin in slot screws would have the bit spin out all the time. The Phillips are self-centereing (obviously) and "cam-out" when torque is hit. The "cam-out" feature is kind of a downside for us since that's where the heads strip out.

It sucks when the europeans use screws on thier airplanes that at a glance look like a phillips, but each slot is offset a little bit from the center. You can jam a phillips in there but it dosen't like it.

Screws strip because of the cheap Chinese metal used to make them.
