Default Weekend-O-NATS Here on FG!

Crack field reporter FlyingGiants member Mike Bargman is onsite at The Academy of Model Aeronautics Headquarters in Muncie, Indiana to bring a weekend full of straight huckin' NATS action back for our enjoyment. Stay tuned RIGHT HERE for the latest scores, and all the action right from the flightline! Take it away Mikey!

Article written by: Mike Bargman

Today, myself and a couple of friends, old and new, made our way to the AMA National Aeromodeling Championships (NATS) in Muncie, IN. Upon exiting the interstate, we could see the AMA Headquarters where the NATS are held. We are here to compete in the Scale Aerobatics IMAC contest. Unlimited, Advanced, Intermediate and Sportsman classes are flown each day. Each class will fly several times a day and will fly their standard known sequences at least twice each day and an unknown sequence once per day. For those who don't know what IMAC is all about, check out the IMAC Headquarters forum here or visit www.mini-iac.com. We've got 67 registered pilots and starting Thursday morning, we will get to work.

Each day will consist of arriving early at the field (6AM) unloading, assembling the aircraft, and trying to soak up everylast bit of the unknown sequence for that morning. Anyone can fly the known sequence, but the unknown is what makes the contests fun. To be able to fly a sequence gracefully and not to mention straight is awesome, but to do it on a whim without practicing it once, really brings out the best pilots from the group. I will be posting pictures and news after each day of flying, so stay tuned. We've all made the trek out here to see how well we all measure up against the rest of the pilots in the country, but when it's all said and done, we're here to see old friends, meet new ones and have an all around good time.

Hey Mike,

Keep an eye out for a new Sportsman pilot, Nick Burik. He'll be the one with his knees shaking real hard, it's his first Nats

I was supposed to go with Arch and Nick, but I had some stuff to finish up here. My intention was to go to the Pattern Nats, but money isn't going to allow me to go, hopefully next year.

Mr. Shaun, no, I will not be flying in the nats as fun as that would be to jump straight to muncie after coming in second in my first basic contest. And the post was made at 11:30pm, I'm in a different time zone. But 1am is normally when I do my best work. Thanks for noticing.

Team OMP! Say what's up to Adam for me!
