Hey guys. My Van (1999 Chevy Venture) has 128,000 miles on it.. and I have installed over the past 2 years new brakes/rotors and tie rods, head gasket, water pump... and belts and hoses... so I hate to dump her. BUT... the tranny is starting to BUMP when shifting... so I know its got an issue. How much (just ball parking) is it to have one of the tranny shops (Amoco or whatever) do a rebuild, or install a rebuilt tranny? I need to know pretty badly.. because I found the same Van as mine with 50K miles on it, has new brakes and hoses, and is in just a tad better shape than mine, and I'd have to cough up around $3800 clams to snag it... or I fix the one I got. I kind of like the one I have.. so anyone have any idea how much a auto tranny is? If it was a stick shift or a car.., I'd change that sucker my self like I did many times in my old Hondas... but this Auto tranny stuff has me tweaked out... I need a pro!

yea.. but I'm a mere mortal... $3800 clams isn't just laying around waiting for me to spend it. ARRGGHH. I could be like that one holiday tale, where the chick sells her hair to buy a watch chain for the dude, and the dude sells his watch to buy combs for the chick. I could sell a plane to buy the van that I only own so I could haul my planes. DAMN... If it wasn't for this blasted hobby I could own a Le Car and be happy!

Sleepy the last rebuild that I had done was on a Lincolin front wheel drive with all the electronics in the transmission. Jasper Rebuild on the one I dropped off (with employee discount - I worked for them at the time) was $1650. That was 1996. A quick check on the Jasper Engines site shows around $1900. I the other places I looked didn't list price.

Just had the tranny replaced in my mom's Pontiac Montana, same as venture i think?? We were able to find a good used tranny for much cheaper than a rebuild, then it was just the cost of labor for the install.

Sleepy, On any other site in the world, one would ask, "What the hell does this tranny job have to do with hucking and planes?" ONLY on FLYING GIANTS (and I do stress ONLY!) can one see the direct connection between fixing the ride and hauling the birds! You said something about a bump when shifting. Pull the pan and check for a filter/screen. Clean this little jewel and put on a new pan gasket with sealant. Snug the pan bolts to ensure a good seal and fill it with fresh Dextron. I'd rather see you spend a Saturday morning under doing this and possibly getting a fix than trading vehicles/spending model airplane funds needlessly! Sometimes dirty fluid causes jerky/uneven shifting in GM vehicles. (Or anything else with an automatic transmission!) Good luck. WT PS: Last time I checked, they were using a 89 Yugo as a target at the artillery range at Ft. Hood. Might make ya a real deal on it if things don't work out! |
