A couple of years ago there was a similar story. An aspiring cluster balloonist did the same thing. However, he had the fore thought to carry a pellet gun to shoot the balloons, one at a time to control his decent. The only problem with his plan....he didn't think to put a tether onto the pellet gun. Yep, you guessed it, He dropped the gun and had no way to cause a decent. He also got to about 10k feet. ended up with frostbite and traveled a very long way before the balloons lost enough gas to descend.

It was back in 1982, Guy by the name of Larry Walters. The kicker was, a couple of TWA and Delta pilots reported it to the Long Beach Tower!! Heres the "Snopes" story; http://www.snopes.com/travel/airline/walters.asp Last edited by Propstriker; 07-12-2007 at 03:58 PM. |

I did a search on this guy and apparently he did it before with a bb gun, but this time he used water for ballast and was able to bleed out helium as he needed to. he was smart to have a parachute...... |

Yes at least he had a chute-his wife and kid were the chase crew--I just wondered what the FAA's position is in cases like this.If he had been killed I guess the NTSB would make a big deal of this kind of thing.

Not sure if they do it anymore but the British Army used to use a blimp with a basket from which paratroopers in training would jump from. The only thing that would worry me about a stunt like this radio towers and power lines.
