Default Cheap Engine for a Funtana .40

Hey guys I have a funtana .40 I picked up from someone that I'm setting up to fly. I know everyone loves running a saito .82-1.00 or equivalent in this airframe, but this is the only plane I have this size and I don't want to invest in an engine like that right now.

Tower has their .75 that looks decent at only $95, but its pretty heavy. I was wondering about the OS .55 AX or Evolution .52. Anyone have any experience with these? With either of these, when I'm done with the funtana I'll have a nice sized engine to slap on any of the numerous .46 sized profiles out there, the tower .75 on the other hand might be a little heavy for a profile that size.

Any other suggestions are welcome,
Jason

Jason,

the Tower .75 is a terrific engine for a Funtana. I used it on the 40S and now the X50. Perfect power, solid weight. Due to the Funtana's poor airfoil, you need to set the CG back to achieve great flight characteristics. Top notch 3D trainer, and overall freestyle plane. the .75 is the around the same weight as most .60's that many were using. a lot more power though. My friend told me that it looked like I had as much power as he did on an O.S. .91FX. You have to prop it right though. I usually run a 13X5 APC, but I limit the high speed passes as it's not really a good thing to run flat out like that on such a small pitched prop. Hover is just below 1/2 throttle. Insane pullout factor as well.

Hope this helps!

My dad has a F40 as well and we've already modified the leading edge of the wings. This makes a huge difference in the flight performance (I have been flying his). The plane will float around at idle with no stall, whereas before it was terrible and would drop a wing if you got too slow or in high speed maneuvers. Now its like a completely different flying airplane. It flys really well and stable a bit nose heavy now, but we are working on getting the CG back to get it better for 3D flying. You can see more info on the mod here, look at the attached article in this post: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/fb.asp?m=5613068

As for the engine I need to see if our LHS can order those tower engines in as I have some store credit with them I need to use. If not will the OS 55 AX be a good fit? It may not be as powerful but its going to be alot lighter than the .75, especially with a slimline pitts muffler on it.

With the .75, you'd have to use a pitts muffler as well. As far as the .55 goes, I would have bought that instead of the .75 when it first came out. However, knowing what I know now, I'm glad I have the .75. It's truely an awesome combo.

what glow plug are you using in the tower .75? Looks like I'm just going to get it as I can get it and a pitts muffler for less than the OS .55.

the Tower plugs are junk. I could not keep mine running with them.(do NOT hold heat) I use either O.S. #8's, or O.S. A3's. In breakin, you'll need an electric starter to get it going at first as the compression is so tight.(yes, I could barely turn it over once I had fuel in it) After a tank or two, mine started on the second flip after priming.(still does, on a normal day) After about a hundred flights on the first Funtana, I lost radio to the plane and it went in full throttle. I didn't do anything to the engine for eight or so months, then I cleaned it out. After I got it oiled again, it ran like a champ.

have you ever run a 13x4W or 14x4W on the .75?

13X5 is the smallest that I would go. Insane pickup. Almost too small of a prop, as far as pitch goes. 14X4W would probably be optimum, but it could be a little thick to get major horses out of it. A 14X4 or 14X5 would be good as well, but I fly off of a really bumpy field and there wouldn't be enough distance for my liking. If I could get someone to handlaunch for me, that might be another story.. I had the most success with a 12X6. Really good prop, but too fast. I didn't want to kill the airframe and a wider prop is better for 3D on the Funtana. If I was flying IMAC, and had built this one, 12X6 would be what I'd be using probably.

What about a used YS63S? I have one on my Funtana 40 and never fly it anymore since going gas. Last ran 6 mo ago and it ran perfectly. Usually flown with 14x4w.
PM if interested.

How about a Thunder Tiger 46........................ Inexpensive, yet powerful, and I think there is no need to buy a pitts muffler for the engine.

The only type of engine that can give good performance in that kind of an airframe in my opinion is a four stroker. You can try a YS which has great performance. Or a saito. But if you just want something to put around with and do some mild aerbatics the 55 ax would be a good choice.

50%, Hows the quality on the Tower .75 engine? Is it a good engine thats going to last awhile? I thought I might have had something with mxwrench and the YS 63 but I haven't heard from him in a week and a half so I want to get this going.

The other engine I've seen thats a decent price new is the Magnum .91 FS. Anyone know how those engines perform?
