Exclamation Newbie to Giants and builds?

Hey guys

Just got delivery of my new 25% Extra 260!

Now, I have built planes but not this big and most have been electrics.
Wanting a good build I rang a fellow club member who is known for building other peoples planes for a price, and the build quality is superb. However for $300 it brings up the cost of the plane even more and I still have servos and other gear to purchase.
Yes I can take my time but just dont want to stuff anything up. My biggest hurdle is hinging surfaces and pinning them. Something I have never done. I mean I have installed hinges on GWS foamies but not 25% gas planes

Anyway can anyone point me to a thread on how to install and pin control surfaces?

or anyone living in Brissy that can give me hand?

What is the kit you are building? And what hinges does it come with? I prefer to use the robart hinge points. They are very easy to install and you will be hard pressed to ever wear them out.

Hi Royster,
Rusty Tumbles is right on the money, I use robarts on anything over a 60 size glow plane , I have had every other sort of hinge fail or wear over time (CA Hinges Mainly ) anyway I recomend using Polyurethane Glue ( Vise Brand at Bunnings ) dont get a big bottle as it will go off no matter what you doto stop it !
For those of you who havent seen what this stuff does it foams as it sets and sticks like stuff to a blanket , i have taken the covering off after using this stuff and you can really see there is no way the hinges will pull out just follow the instructions on the Robart hinge packet and you cant go wrong

Thanks for the tips! The plane came from peakmodel.com

The surfaces have the slots, I just have to install the CA hinges (or Robart)

Where can I pick up a CMPRO 260 P from at a good price Sean?

Question Re: Newbie to Giants and builds?

SERVOS!

Whats can you guys recommend in Hitec that will do a good job but without going over the top?

eg. HS-625's or HS-5645's ?

Plane is a 25% Extra 260 capable of 3D and although I dont 3D, pilots who do will be flying this plane as well. Dual servos on the elevator as well.

If you can afford it, go with 5985's. You WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED! They are the perfect servos for this plane. It's on the pricey side, but it is worth it. If you can't afford it, go with the 5645's. Try to stay away from analog servos. But as for rudder, you are going to need a really strong servo, a 5985, or 5995.

What motor do you plan on running?

Thanks!

I'll check out what deal Tower have on them

Engine is a SPE40 40cc with no mods till I get it up and running. Future mods will be a velocity stack, rings and maybe a different carb and CDI, but stock for now.

Hi Royster, im the Australian distributor for ARF Light & Fun who make the Extra you have. the 25% extra is only setup for 1 elevator servo! you can't use 2 as there is not enough room for it. Paul Xu at ARF told me he made the change because he wanted less tail weight at the rear. The original design had 1 servo for the elevator and 1 for the rudder which is now a pull pull setup.
You should also know this plane 3D's well, as i have seen Paul fly this plane. Mind you he is not your average pilot.

Hi Wheels

Theres a thread on RC Universe where a guy has fitted 2 servos with a small mod. The reason for 2 was that I bought the SPE40 engine and rather than add weight I thought a servo would be better.
But if Paul reckons it wont fail with 1 servo then all the better, less money forking out for another Hitech 5645 servo.

Ah, I hate building rather fly em then put em together.
