Post 25% Extra 260/SPE40 Build

Well my son and I have started on the build of our first gas plane!

On this thread I hope to share what I am doing and hopefully people can help me with advice along the way. Most probably may be the longest build here as I like to take my time.
I'll try and post up as many pics as I can as we go so you can see what it is or what I am not doing.
This bird is a bit bigger than our biggest plane which is a 90/120 size pattern plane so hopefully things shouldnt be too much different apart from we are going gas and not glow.

First step (besides unpacking the box) was to coat the inside of the plane with a mix of 30min epoxy, microballoons and metho.
Then I'll look at ways of adding strenght to the engine mount and box area with corner stock. I'm thinking of ordering a isolation mount for the SPE40 thats going to mounted, so hopefully most of agree with that.

Pics soon...

Hey Royster, look forward to seeing how your build goes. Gas engines are alot of fun im sure you will get hooked in like the rest of us and forget about glow. Ive never heard of your engine but googled it and im interested in seeing how it performs.

What are you intending on using the plane for?? Most of the IMAC guys tend not to use the rubber mounts as this allows your engine thrust vectors to change during flight. If you soft mount your equipment you should be alright. Everyone is at a majour comp this weekend but hopefully they can chime in on this topic when they get back.

Good luck!

Thanks b0Bro

Usage is mainly club flying and some pattern but getting into IMAC. I dont 3D (at the moment) but a friend can and he WILL 3D the plane so he suggested the following servos:

Futaba
S9550 = Dual elevator
S9451 = Ailerons
S9351 = Rudder (pull pull)
S9202 = Throttle

or S3050 for ailerons on a budget.

Sounds good to me about the mounts. I'll leave it stock

Was going to get a pitts style muffler but I dont think its going to help much at all in the way of power. Not like a expansion chamber on a 2 stroke motoX bike ya need the that chamber. Again I'm a week end hacker so the standard side dump will be fine

Might add a velocity stack but thats about it till I get her in the air and make judgments then.

Question Re: 25% Extra 260/SPE40 Build

Heres some pics guys.

What method do you guys use to install the stab?

I have measured either side of the stab for equal length then a string to measure equal distance for wing tip (not aileron) to stab tip and then CA to keep from moveing then epoxy the the stab in. ??

Help! Re: 25% Extra 260/SPE40 Build

Does anyone know of a metal machinist in Brisbane who can make me up some stands off for my engine mounts?

The ones supplied are too short and the muffler hits the firewall.

Have requested form the people I bought the package off and they are unable to help

Yep, Howie has a range of stand offs that will work However, be sure you need to move the engine forward, and not modify the firewall, this could be both determined by checking the spinner clearance on the cowl, and the CG.
