Default WRAM Wrap-Up!

EXTRA... EXTRA....FLYING GIANTS ROAD REPORT CONTINUES!

WRAM SHOW 2006 White Plains, NY

I just got back from the WRAM Show in White Plaines NY, and have to say a good time was had by all! The weather was FRIGID but warm inside the White Plains County Center, where the entire North East population of R/C enthusiasts assembled to view and buy the latest and greatest of what the industry had to offer! I had a chance to meet several FG Members (including SHORTBUS, his Dad and Grand Dad...all R/C flyers), our designated FG photographer. and he's not really as big a wise ass as he comes across on the site in person! Now I know you Jon...so behave yourself!! The gathering drew folks from as far as Northern Vermont all the way down to a few guys I spoke to from the great state of Virginia. The presence of electric aircraft and accessories was astounding, and has really taken over a large sector of the hobby previously owned by fuel powered aircraft!

I had a chance to visit with several of the most notable venders at the venue to chat and ask questions about their new goodies. I can't list them all, so if I left anyone out...please forgive me. As usual, Jason and Don Shulman of Shulman Aviation were there with the Hacker line of electric motors, batteries, aircraft and products and some new exciting releases! Just wait until you get a look at the all built up 3D electric Bipe they unveiled at the show! It looks similar to a Chip Hyde Double Vision and is relatively inexpensive. I definitely need one of these babies! Al Young was there with JTEC/RADIOWAVE with the brand new 35% Extra 300 that JeeUm (Jim McQueen) finished in the scale yellow and red scheme. This plane and scheme is absolutely beautiful! All I can say is WOW! When this ARF is released, I will have one! Not only did Al have some great ARF/ARC aircraft on display, but have you seen this guys custom muffler work? Really top notch stuff and the prices won't make you grab your wallet and cringe! John "The Tank" Banks picked up a custom made, Pitts style muffler for a DA 50 that was sweet! Of course I had to stop by the DA booth where Dave Johnson and Brian "Huffy" were constantly swamped with customers. and drool over the killer engines (I already have four and want MORE)! It looked like they were sold out before the show ended. Thank goodness for that or I would have bought another! Was that John Banks walking out with a new DA150??? I think so! Hobby Lobby had their usual buffet of electric models and accessories! The Alpha Models MIG rocks!

I also have to mention the booth that got a ton of my cash! I swore this year that I wouldn't buy anything! Yeah right!! I'm so freaking weak!! AVIATION MODELS! Uggggg! If you don't know about these planes you must live under a rock! I spent a ton of time hanging out with Craig and Lee which was a big mistake! I ended up buying a new AM Orange/Checkerboard scheme 33% YAK and a profile YAK as well. These guys are great and are really pumped up about the products they represent. It seems they have a YAK in every size under the sun! Another notable booth was NoBS Batteries. This is the guy (Steve Anthony) www.hangtimes.com, who worked for SR for 20 years and told me more about batteries than my Mom warned me about! After seeing the internal works of all the other generic NiCad and NiMH batteries and how they are assembled and the way NoBS Batteries are put together...I was sold! I hurt my wallet really bad there too! Frank Noll Jr and the Great Planes/Futaba gang were there in full force. Regardless if you fly JR or Futaba, you need to check out the new Futaba Transmitter! I won't spill the beans on this one, but it is truly amazing! Great Planes also has a new 25% YAK ARF that looks really cool! Looked like a good candidate for a DA 50.! ZDZ was there with a vast array of different engines. They looked really nice and the prices were pretty competitive. The ZDZ Super 80 looks like a winner. Planes Plus and FMA had some neat new products including a ARF flying Hydro boat from FMA that is 3D capible! I could go on and on and list every vendor but I'm sure the ones near and dear to your 3D hearts have been covered.

In the early afternoon, one of the side meeting rooms was set up for some 3D electric flying demos! These guys were wild! The ceiling was no more than 20 feet, but that didn't stop these maniacs from Hucking hard and fast! I'm sure you guys have seen or flown the foamys yourself, but to see the skill and talent it took to pull off the stunts these pilots were ripping in such a tight area was amazing! Time for some SIM practice for me so I can teach those young dudes a lesson...oh yeah, bought a AFPD SIM too! There goes my tax return check!

The WRAM Show is not the size and magnitude of the Toledo Show, but is was a terrific way to spend a cold winter weekend, checking out the new and main stay products, meeting with the flying buddies and getting cranked up for the up coming season! If you live in the North East USA, it has become a honored tradition that myself as well as thousands of others, look forward to as the snow fly's and you look forward to spring and warmer days!

Texx, it was great meeting you too along with a bunch of our other Giants friends that stopped by to spend some time with us. Bryan, Lee, Paul and I had a blast hanging out and talking airplanes with the Giants gang and it was cool to finally put a face with the names. Hopefully we can have some sort of get together out here on the East Coast this summer. Regardless, we'll see many of you at Joe Nall soon. Won't be long 'till the cold is gone and we can get back outside and get back to Hucking!! Keep having fun, Craig

Nice write-up Texx,

We all sure appreciate what you went through this weekend to bring us the latest and greatest!!

It must have been terrible to have to spend all of that time at the show...just terrible.

Who puts out that electric bipe? That sounds like one of my "must haves".

Again, thanks for the write-up.

And Shortbus,

Thank you for the pics dude! Great job!!!

WOW Didn't think you were coming this year MAX! We all; went me, JimC, EasyEd, all the Windingbrook guys on Friday and I have to say it was a nice one too this year. Better that last year and the year before that. It was very crowded Friday. Usually not that crowded! I picked up a 14MZ radio! Frank Noll talked us into it so I go to NY and pick 3 of em up Wednesday! Cannot wait! I think I will sleep with it the first few nights...That is if my wife don't mind... she already knows that all of us are little boys trapped in men's bodies! HA!

Ok later sorry I (we) missed you.

HA! That will be the day huh? Yes I have seen that one. I was trying to find the other that didn't look so old! I have yet to find it yet just a lot of text about Ascleppios...He pissed off Zeus by healing too many people and bring them back from the dead....Well you know CPR and that stuff..So I will be careful not to piss the guys off for sure by dressing that way this trip!

I am getting everything ready. Next weekend I am testing the two planes I will be bringing. I still got to get Rolling Harrier to help me set the timing. I saw Brian at the WRAM show Finally at DA. He told me exactly how to do it. So I got the 25% Wagstaff and a 40 size Cub, So I cannot go wrong. One big bird and one small one. And if they give me trouble I will go to the local hobby shop and buy a Aerobird! HA HA HA! I am flying damn it! I am cooped up in this place all winter...Today I ran the Cub up I changed engines out last night and put a .61 O.S. 4 stroke in there. Runs good but I froze! I saw that it ran and it needed tweaking but when it stopped I could move my hand so i rushed back inside! Too cold! I cannot wait to feel that Southern warm air! When I get back here it will be the first day of Spring so I won;t have to wait too much longer! At least I will get my flying fix while I am down there!
