Ok, Am I the only one here that can't torque roll? ![]() I've tried for the last year and I seem like I'm making no head way. I can hold a hover on G3.5 for as long as I want to . ( I haven't tried on my bigguns yet ).But when the plane turns and I see the landing gear, it all falls apart. ![]() AAUUUGGgggggg..This is SO frustrating!!!! Help please........... Shaun |

Just keep trying. Be persistant and it will finally click. I promise. There's only one other member at my 250 member club that can torque roll besides me. It ain't easy to get it to click. But after that it's very simple.

Keep on practicing on the sim. Also, practice on a foamy. When you get done practicing, practice some more. When you can have a conversation with someone while torque rolling your foamy without messing up, you are ready for the big plane down on the deck.

Practice upright harriers coming at you or inverted harriers going away from you. That will help you get used to the orientation of belly-in hovering. I've found harriers, but upright and inverted, build a solid foundation to grow on. Practicing harrier figure-8's helps build/master orientation. Practice on the sim until your thumbs bleed. Once you've mastered it on the sim with one model, try another. The sim is invaluable and I owe a lot to it; however, it will only take you so far. Nerves and confidence are just as important as skill and the sim generally doesn't allow you to build those required strengths. You just gotta burn fuel and train the brain. |

If you haven't tried this yet, your probably more than ready to look at it from a different angle. Go make a stick plane, or buy one, and start memorizing rudder positon vs orientation. It helped me, but you still need to get on the balance beam, and work it.

Im sure everyone has there own way to practice this but for me, I focus on the nose of the plane when hovering, push the nose the way it needs to go to stay straight, when it rolls around just think about moving the stick the way the nose is going to bring it back, It is kind of a rithum thing once you get the hang of it. The sim is great practice, come straight in an pull into hover with the belly facing you and get to where you can hold that, then your there. |

When I was practicing torque rolls I read some very helpful advice somewhere on here to help out. They said when the belly is towards you "Fly the tail". When you are staring at the top view of the plane in a hover you are essentially flying the nose to correct with rudder (pointing the nose in conjunction with the stick movement). So when the belly comes around during a torque roll concentrate on the tail and move the stick in the direction of where you want it to go. It's similar to when you first started flying ailerons and you would move the stick towards the wing dropping. One way I helped myself lock in the rudder at a safe altitude was to do stall turns with the belly towards you. Pull an upline, 1/2 roll, and then see how you do getting the plane to wing over in the direction you want. Do those a bunch every flight and you will eventually get the 'feel' of it. You will have to think about it for a while but you will eventually start doing it naturally. Sim flying will help you too (just do 15-20 minutes of constantly torque rolling every day for a week). But the nerves in reality will need the helpful voice in the back of your mind telling you to "Fly the tail!" I feel your pain. I flew pylon and slope primarily for 15 years and my left thumb was essentially 'untrained' other than some mild pattern style maneuvers from sport flying stuff. I had to retrain my brain to include the left stick on maneuvers and get the coordination of the two. 3-D flying is unlike anything I had ever done and my brain was hardwired for smooth flying on the right stick. But light is at the end of the tunnel with practice and persistence. A good foamie is also a serious confidence booster!! Last edited by Troy P; 09-17-2007 at 04:56 PM. |

WWHHhooooo.HHhhhooooooo.........Im half there. I took ya'lls advise and started controlling the tail when the belly is facing me. I do it in IMAC but just didn't put the two together. Anyway, I can hover with the belly facing me know. It should be to long before I can smooth out the transition between the belly facing me, and the canopy. Thanks for the help!!!! Shaun |

Keep practicing and it will click. When it does you will have a lot of fun torquing down the runway in the wind.
