our club is looking into putting in DB and noise control levels. and as vice pres i have a hand in what we set as the limits. and as i have have been reading and understand it that ama is starting to ask to control the levels also. what i would like is for some people to give me feed back on what kind of DB levels that you guys are going by at your fields. and Mr BIFF if you are out there i know pat is starting to crack down there so what levels are you all going to be useing at tripple tree? we are kinda in the same deal as tripple tree in that we have a lot of room and not to much other noise to make a difference, but have got quite a few houses close enough to be a problem. any info will be great i haft to meet with the board of directors next week to start getting ideas. |

If you are talking about the 3-D'ers down on the deck and making lots of noise and dust right in front of everybody, then it's up to the club officers to disallow that activity so close to the flightline. Let me know how it works out. Bobby Sec IMAC

I am the noise police at our field. We have 92db at 6m (20'). This number is very hard to meet or beat with a 150cc. 100cc can do it with 2 blade props. The problem is the prop noise, I think the IMAC rule of 96db at 25' is a good place to start. Outlaw diverters on gassers, canisters only and make sure the glow planes have mufflers. Glow planes should always beat the 92db at 20', the only guys with glow planes that failed deserved too, at our field. Simply getting rid of 2 blade master airscrew props will also help. I AM NOT BASHING MASTER AIRSCREW but they seem to be consistently louder!!!!!, of the glow planes that did fail all were using MA props. APC and Graupner props are quieter. This can be an extremely contentious issue within a club and overzealousness can set you back. European levels are very low but they have a couple of decade head start and usually fly gassers at special fields only. This is a huge issue and it is better to start a noise program before there is a problem, after is to late.

we are going to set a glow and a gaser level. the gassers big prob is ripping of the prop and IMO that is just stupid. it has no benifet other than to draw attion to the person. and the older style benitt muffler type of set up has looked to be out side the normal levels. the only prob i am realy concernd with on the glow is the ones of us who run a tune pipe on speed planes or after market power mufflers to help the power of their engines. me for example i haft to have the pipe to get the power needed to get the speeds i am looking for. ( its an os 46 on a hollysmoke delta and can adv about 140-145mph) most other glow mufflers are already quite enough unless they have messed with it. and yes it is a problem that will get bigger if not controled but in our case the city ownes the land we are useing, we just lease it. and if to many people complan then we can be asked to leave. |

One other benefit to setting a standard is you can and should take that to the city and let them know you are being proactive. Trust me this goes a long way. The ripping prop thing is usually attention but not always and some leeway in time should considered. I am a case in point. I bought a used qq 102" with a 3w 106 QS engine. As the plane came the stock gear clearance didn't allow a bigger than 28" prop. I have spent over $500 on props so far to meet my performance requirements and noise levels. I still don't have the right prop the engine is, as far as noise is concerned, to powerful for it's size. I have now got taller gear, (the old gear was way to soft) so I can try larger diam. props but it is an expensive crap shoot. If you have gasser pilots make sure they are aware that 3w and DA have the exact same bolt pattern. This way trying props is not as expensive. CF props are quieter than wood due to less flex but are more expensive. At our club we do have a higher noise limit but only one plane at that higher limit may be in the air. This is a good way to start things off with the gassers.

It takes prop and mufflers (cans or tuned pipes) and throttle management to keep the sound down. Bobby
