It is according what size electrics you have flown. If they are small 49" wingspan electrics then no dont get a big 50cc gasser for your first. Get a trainer or even a bigger sport type plane. I see too many people jump up to a gasser and they can take it off and fly it o..k...a..y but when it comes to landing they cant land at all. They keep telling me it wants to float and never get on the ground and I take the controls and it is perfect.

When I read these kind of posts what I actually see between the lines is this: "Hey guys, no matter what anyone tells me, I have my mind made up to by a 50cc gas plane. So please validate me, so I feel better about my purchase". And this is not a bad thing. Be true to yourself. If you really want a 50cc plane, and you have the money to properly outfit the plane, GO FOR IT. because if thats truly what you want you won't be happy until you get it. BUT, you said you have been flying for a while. Thats great, but when you step into the gas world your dealing with more money and more responsibility. A gas plane could kill (I guess anyplane can kill.. but I think you know what I mean) its a much bigger, heavier flying object with a 6000 rpm saw blade on the front of it. That being said. Join a club. Get help with the assembly. Get help with the set up and PLEASE get help with the first few flights. If you do these things, this will: a) Save you money (assembly mistakes and even a crash are costly) b) Make you much more comfortable around your plane c) Fit right into the gas crowd. Do things the right way, and I see no problem jumping into a gasser. Do them the wrong way, and you could cause people harm, and cost yourself a lot of loot. my 13.5 cents.

To me it is all according what type of electrics he has flown. If he has flown built up electrics like the QQ Yak 49" electric he is ahead and a 50cc should not be as big of a problem. But if he means Foamies then I see a problem. Join a local club and ask around. They will help you out for sure.

You should be fine. Just get help with the set up and maiden. Believe me.. I wish I would have had more help with the set up on my first gasser. I made a few dumb mistakes that are easily avoided with guidance from someone who has done it a few times.

As already stated, if you do it right you can make the leap. That means not doing what I did with my 25% CAP232.....used Karbonite servos and they were trashed in the first turn by the forces of the big plane....lucky I got it down with rudder and elevator with the damage I did (trashed wing). So get help with the setup, here or at the field. Also get help with your first flights...a buddy box with an experienced big bird pilot. Before the maiden the entire plane should be inspected for proper setup and all things glued up and properly secured. 50cc planes fly so nice, that's all I do these days (because nothing bigger fits in my Honda Accord).

I went from a foamie 27% H9 Cap (glow) to a 100cc. That said I have flown competition slope racing and thermal for years. I'd say go for it. Get a 50cc, but get good servos like the 5955 that will transfer to a bigger gasser. The DL50s are great engines also. I'd recommend the Aeroworks 260 as building is mostly done and quality is awesome! Heck after flying the 100cc they are no harder, just takes more landing approach setup in the beginning to keep things easy.

I'm doing something similar. I have been flying for nearly 2 years and the biggest airplane I have owned is the extreme flight Vanquish. Now I'm building a Carden 35% 206. So straight from a 47" is airplane to a 100cc. I have some very limited stick time on friends giants. I know I'm going to have help setting the airplane up and doing the maiden and such. I think the most important thing is to be honest about your flying skills. Really step back and take stock. Could you fly the IMAC basic sequence with your electric? I didn't really start to become a competent pilot until I started trying to fly precision. That has made a HUGE difference for me. I also have hours of sim time with the larger models. Sure its the sim but you can learn a lot in the sim. If i had to list my personally weaknesses as a pilot I would say that I am uncomfortable flying in traffic and I cant roll right nearly as well as I roll left. I don't consider these problems to be so bad that i should get a gasser but I aware they are there. Whats your skill level as a pilot? What maneuvers makes you uncomfortable? |
