Default Power supply and wattage

This may have been covered already somewhere else, but I haven't been able to find it.

If my charger is able to deliver a certain wattage to batteries, say 500w for the sake of the thread, do I need a power supply that is rated to 500w or greater?

What I'm planning on doing is one of the DIY computer power supply, 12v DC power supplies. If the power supply I'm using is rated to 300w, will this work with the charger that can deliver 500w to the batteries?

If this question is answered anywhere else or anyone has a possibly answer it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for any help given.

Default Re: Power supply and wattage

It will work but only up to 60% of your chargers max output. Most chargers are rated for less than 300 watts so you should be able to charge most batteries not problem. For instance you could charge a 10 cell lipo at 7.14 amps with that power supply. A 500 watt charger would be able to charge that same battery at almost 12 amps. Hope this helps.

This is a good description of what you'll see from a 300Watt P/S

You might try the Frankenpower thread in Electrics, Git R Done by Mike Bargman. A lot of good info and how to do it, what not to do.

This should be the link . FrankenPower! Building a 12V Power Supply
