Anyone put Side Force Generators on E-flite Extra 260? I have thought about it, but no sense in reinventing the wheel so to speak. If someone has found it a waste of time, then maybe I should try something else. If some one has found the correct placement and size, then I would appreciate being told the information. I have tried a few things, but I know I still need to modify the plane so it flies like I want it to fly. I have no modifications that would help anyone. Maybe someone else does!e-gull |

Well, what made me think of this is the Turmoil in G4. Compared to the Flatana, which is similar, the Turmoil flies like it is on rails. The difference is as drastic as the difference between a VW and Porche. So many of the new models have SFG it makes me wonder if they would help improve the Extra. None of the models I fly have a SFG. Maybe I should put one on the Extra and make it removeable. I just thought I would try benefiting from other's knowledge. With the weather we are having it will be a while before I test the Extra. e-gull |

I have seen one fly before, and I didn't think it needs SFGs. You can try with some small ones about 3-4" tall, placed on the outter wingtips, held on with some pieces of tape, or cut for a press fit.

I say go for it! Never hurts to test things out. Depron works too, just tape it on securely and test away. If it doesn't work or you need to change it, no problem. When you find the sweet spot, duplicate the SFG in depron/ balsa and you've got a winner. Here's an example or two of some of the stuff I'm messing around with @ the moment.

I think I will give it a try soon. First the weather will have to cooperate. Second I will have to fly the plane as it is for a while. I made structural changes in the fall and have not really flown it, but once since then. That was with a two cell and found batteries were not the best. I need to run a few flights with the 3 cell and under good weather. Then, I will have a good idea of before and after. Tape on the SFG after the few non-SFG trial flights and if better, then glue SFG in place. e-gull |

I took the landing gear off because the grass was too long. I took off the wing brace. put a foam diagonal brace from the horizontal to vertical body. put balsa triangular stock behind motor mount. it flies ok with 2cell but cant pull out well from hover. on 3cell it does great. i had to get rid of the stock wing brace because everytime i put a battery in the cf would bust off and it wasnt doing anything then but getting in the way. i tried taping in extra cf spar but not need and extra weight so i took it off. it flies well but not as well as my Fancy Foam Edge. The Edge is almost twice the weight and can turn by stopping and pivoting in the air up to 540 degrees before it gets wobbly and wants to fall off on the side. I admit most planes don't stop in the air and pivot like on a lazy suzanne and take off in any direction from that point that you want. I probably just have to get used to the extra. more time and practice. it is a nice little plane and i flew it from one lane of parking spaces in a park parking lot with no problems. snow so didnt want to go out in the field. it loops and rolls fine. flies well outside in light winds under 8mph. it is tempting to try to improve a foamy though. they are so easy to fix and work on. a change can be done in minutes. e-gull |

I put the wheels and wing braces on. The wing had a warp without the brace. Since we were flying from the parking lot when snow or puddles from rain, I put the wheels on and maybe I can do touch and goes like I do with the Slow Stick. The Slow Stick has ailerons, lipo, and brushless 110 watt Himax. The tail is enlarged with big throws. One of the things I don't like about the Extra is that the foam is so thin that when a distance away the sun shining through the wing makes the wing look the same upside down or right side up. My Fancy Foam is clearly visible and can tell if right side up or not at twice the distance. Yea, I know an indoor plane usually doesn't fly 500 to 1000 feet away. Case of want the cake and eat it too. Wind is still high so Edge grounded.

Flew the Extra this morning in 3 mph wind. I used Gorilla Glue to put the landing gear on and that is much better. CA doesnt take the shock of hard landings as well. The Gorilla Glue is more flexable and gives more contact area since it expands covering more area. Took off from the street and landed in the grass with no problem. Flare at reduced power to have it hardly roll at all to a perfect landing. Used the 3 cell then 2 cell batteries and plane flew great with either pack. It needed the 3 cell to do 3D. With the CG in the new position and the bracing put back the plane is very stable and can do any 3D I can do. Best if wind below 5 mph. Indoor plane after all.
