Let me ask something here, should I expect unfriendliness at clubs in general? I went out to the club field today that I recently joined for the first time and there were about 6 guys in the little field house sitting out the drizzle and nobody spoke to me at all. I'm not trying to be everybody's best buddy but this is not the first time I've been to a club field and felt excluded. I had to basically introduce myself and about 2 sentences were said and then nothing. I recognized one of them as an officer of the club from the meeting. Oh well I guess if thats the way its going to be fine, I'll keep to myself and just fly. Just wondered if thats what to expect as I visited another club in the area and got the same thing.

We have some guys like that at our club, it may just take some time before the warm up to you. If not just do your thing and eventually I'm sure you'll meet some new people who are friendly enough to hold a conversation.

I don't know where you fly but you can come to the Kitsap ARCs field and fly anytime and be treated like a long lost brother. I really can't even imagine people NOT being friendly at a flying club. Weird!!

my last culb was like this out of 100 members i only talk to 4 for them. most of the people there would just come to bash on others flying style ( but would never put a plane up them self) or the way there flying. for them it was more about the politics then the flying itself. i would just fly by your self the NICE POEPLE will apper out form the bandwagon |

I am not sure what part of the country you are in, but in here southeast, we don't seem to have that problem..at least at the fields I have been to. I have been to alot of fields around here, and I have always been welcomed. Also, most, if not all, of the clubs around here, will let you fly as a guest for a little while before joining. I have found that is a great way to find out if you fit in with the rest of the group... Good luck for your search for a club, and if you are ever in the Winston Salem, NC area, come fly with us at the RAMS club..400 acres of pure heaven with Pilot Mtn as a backdrop. Tim AG4RZ

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated problem. I have visited quite a few fields over the past couple of years. Most of the fields I was treated like a long lost brother. At others the members didn't want to give you the time of day. Differences include the area of the country, the average age of the club members, number of members in the club. What I have found, on the average, is that the smaller clubs with a good mix of ages, are the more friendly. Also the more active the membership of the club the more friendly.

In my experience, there are always a few guys that just join the club to make and meet new friends. But for the most part, the rest of the people kinda keep to themselves. They will "scope you out" to see what kind of a pilot you are or what part of the hobby you're into (warbirds, helis, aerobatics, etc.) before they bother to approach or talk to you. I have only experienced one incident where the people at a field were complete A-holes, and that was R/C Country in Ontario, California, back in '93-94 on 4th street. A friend of mine invited me as a guest. He belonged to the club, but didn't fly there much because of the A-holes. You will find that there are a multitude of different types of fliers/people at every club, for the most part, and they will usually all huddle into their little click. |
