Why would you not just get the Futaba module? I have a 12z with the Futaba module and it works great. I wouldn't mess with the spectrum unit if it were me.

but then -that wasn't the question-- A friend is setting up his 9z (Futaba) with the Spektrum -to get the use of the rxs Spektrum offers . For his own reasons he is not interested in Futaba's rx. - He likes tiny foamy model rx- and multi rx larger ones. He sees many of these in use all the time -and is apparantly very impressed with them And it allows him to get some more good use from the 9Z, with which he is very familiar. I also did not answer the question correctly - but it at least may explain the combo in question |

That's actually not a bad idea. Everybody tells me the 12z is the coolest radio ever but the futaba receiver offering is weak. Using the spektrum module would give you the best of both worlds. TF |

i dont mind the resoulution. I have pattern buds who let me borrow their transmitter when i flew their planes. A 12z and a 14mz. I loved them both, and since all my systems are on the spektrum 2.4 system, I mind as well get the spektrum module so i can fly all my planes without having to switch out recievers. And most important of all the 12z has channel mapping which allows me to program and fly as a MODE 4 which i use. So i can actually use al the preprogrammed features of the radio. Thanks for anymore help Mikael Fedon |

it isnt not much having to mix the aileron as the rudder but not being able to use any of the preprogrammed mixes that came with the radios and saving the other mixes for matching elevators or ailerons. I wont try to rewire the radios. too dangerous for me to do it |

If you like the tx go ahead and give it a go but as mentioned, all you'll get is 8 channels from the Spektrum module and I'm guessing the tx will have to be set in it's PPM mode since that's what is required for say the 9Z or 9C radios since their 9th channel is on/off and only available in PCM which is proprietary.

If you do, please describe the difference or loss you found. Of course you loose a few channels -but the overall gain in going this route--especially with the bargain basement cost of the upgrade -sure looks appealing. We will be looking "over the shoulder at this conversion" -and I have a pot full of various servos and batteries to use to see what may be lost--or gained. | ||||||||||||||||||

The good thing about the 12Z is that it is so easy to modify the channels and functions. I understand now why you would want to go with the spectrum system. It still seems to me that it might make sense in the long term to switch away from the spektrum system when you switch radios. Even though you will have to buy more receivers (I am not sure how many planes you have so this cost could vary wildly) you will have a system that probably will be around longer. I would think in the future the FASST receiver lineup will only get better. My fundamental concern if I were you would be how motivated JR/Spectrum are to continue to support the system for Futaba radios now that FASST is out. I would worry that you will invest more in a combo you might need to walk away from. You will love the 12Z -- great radio! |
