| Stiiiiiiil Huckin'! ![]() | http://www.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30200-13519019,00.html I Ate Frogs And Lizards' Updated: 20:38, Friday April 14, 2006 A man who survived nearly three months alone in the Australian outback by eating lizards and frogs has spoken of his ordeal. Ricky Megee lost half his bodyweight during his stint in the desert, when he was forced to munch leeches and grasshoppers to stay alive. The 35-year-old was discovered looking like a "walking skeleton" by farm workers. He had set off on a 3,500-mile journey to take up a new job in Port Hedland, Western Australia, but never made it to his destination. Details of how he came to be lost were unclear. Some reports said his car had broken down and others that he had been drugged and dumped by a hitchhiker he picked up. "The last thing I remember was driving up the road and getting a bit dazed and confused," he told the Times newspaper. "The next thing was waking up, face down, in a hole. There was some plastic on me with some rocks and dirt thrown on top. "What woke me was that there were four dingoes scratching the rocks to try to get at me." He described to reporters how he had left frogs on the roof of his makeshift shelter to go "a bit crispy" before he ate them. "I would go out just before dark and gather what I could to eat," he said. "I ate one meal a day - that is enough to survive. I just hoped and prayed that someone would find me." Since being rescued last week he has been recovering in hospital in Darwin.

Well it happens for real sometimes in the outback. The problem is if he was a foreigner or wasnt at all clued up about outback travel it is easy to get into trouble. It is hard to fathom the immense distances between pockets of civilisation in outback Australia. Some landowners need to fly light aircraft to visit their neighbours as they could be 150 miles or more away. Imagnie Jo and FLo, the closest human beings to you being that faraway. A family friend owns a comparitively small property in far western New South Wales, it is about 100 000 acres and the nearest pub is 60 km away from his house. Luckily his property backs right up to the pub so you can drive there without using public roads and miss those pesky random breath test units. |

Crikey! These tourists come down under for a "Crocodile Dundee" style adventure but, when we deliver, all they can do is complain. There's just no pleasing some people. ![]() "So where the bloody hell are ya?" |

Homebush... hmmmmm, the name has a ring to it!! Looks like a cool dump! We have a few very remote places like that in the desert between AZ and CA. Definately not as remote as the guy in the article, but close. It's amazing how big your desert is, this is an amazing story. I guarentee when I come down there, I will be padlocked to one of you guys

| Our desert isn't all that different to those in the US. We have a lot less cactii but we make up for it in venomous snakes and spiders. A good bushman is never far from a good feed and a cold beer |

BBRCP, (back before RC planes) I used to live in Exmouth WA. DJ'd at the local pub on the weekend fer my coin & spent the m'jority of it on the sheilas & the EMU. Weren't no cactus but yer right about the snakes & spyders, & the joeys, & the dang lizards too. True story. I watched 3 abo's ketch one o 'dem lizards once. One of 'em stood with 'is arms out like a scarecrow & the other two scared the lizard. Stupid critter tried to climb the "scarecrow" like a tree & the 1'st two beat 'em with sticks. Tore the scarecrow up some but we all ate lizard tail for dinner that night! Man, I miss that place.... |
