Talking Maui, HI flying fields

Whats going on guys. I'll be getting married next year and coming to Maui for a whole week and I would love to go out and find a flying field and check out some Hawaii Huckin and maybe some stick time if someone is brave enough to let me while the wifey is laying out on the beach. J/K. I used to live on Maui so I am sort of familiar with the area. There used to be an old crop duster field that folks used to fly RC and drive RC cars on. Cant remember the road name but I do think I might be able to find my way back. Does anyone out there live and fly on Maui??

Chris

Howdy,

I remember seeing planes fly at a spot off of the the hiway just past Puunene going toward Kihei.I was told that it's an old dragstrip. It gets up to 20kts+ there in the afternoon though...It's right in the middle of a cane field.
I would love to go fly gliders off of the top of Haleakala!!!

Contact Big Earl Bradford in Makawao when you get there..He has the scoop on flying in Maui!

Dave

I get there a few times a month and the field is on the road between the airport and the west side of the island. There is a sign on the south side of the road for the R/C field, go-cart track, and a motocross track. You will see an old drag strip as you work your way through the cane fields. Get there early because the wind can get wicked ugly by 10-AM.

Yeah, I remember it being on the left of the road right before you get to kihei. Yeah the winds used to scream all day long though. Makes for some not so fun flying.

I flew at their field once when I was on vacation. By far the most beautiful place I've ever flown! This is an awesome group of guys as one of them let me fly his plane and I had just met him that day.

Here's their web site:

F3AFlyer7, did you contact them at all or did you just show up and start talking with them. Do they know about this web site?

This was a few years ago so no they don't know about FG. But yes I did e-mail them a couple months before my trip. If you know exactly when you are going out there, one of the members may meet you at the field. They are always happy to meet RCers from all over the country!
