I would like to sympathize buuuuut. Fast forward ten years. Lets say you have kids, a wife and a mortgage. I will also assume you work to pay the bills. I will even assume you have a "good" job that pays at least a little above average. Assume your pay is $35/hr. You work 44 hrs a week, you leave home in the AM at 7:30 and are home by 5:30, and you work most saturdays till noon, home by 12:30. OK. Gives you a weekly pay of $1540.00, and 4.5 hrs per weeknight to play with "planes" right. Money first. $1540.00X4weeks = 6160.00 per month. pretty good, should be lots of airplane money in that right? First to be paid is the goverment so off goes 40% leaving $3696.00 here is the rest of the riff raff Mortgage $785.00 your car payment $400.00 wife's car payment $450.00 Home and car insurance $250.00 home maint. $80.00 Gas bill $250.00 power bill $250.00 gasoline $300.00 FOOD $800.00 Clothing $200.00 vehicle maint $80.00 kids soccer, hockey etc $100.00 RRSP $150.00 Family entertainment $150.00 Sat TV (or cable, basic) $40.00 Total $4285.00 oops, better put insome overtime, overtime at $52.50, you need to work another 18.7 hrs more just to pay the bills (per month) 52.50X18.7= $981.75 - 40% tax = $589.05 = $3696 reg pay = 4285.05 just when you thought you could pay all the "bills" your kids need glasses, or someone need to see the dentist, or blah blah blah I also have allowed a VERY meager allowance for entertainment, wich includes eating at Mc D's for dinner, or grabbin a coffee at tim hortons or takin the kids out to a movie. Back to the old time problem. We are working 44hrs a week + 18.7 hrs(+) of overtime = 48.7 hrs a week of work, not including a commute etc. soo after working 5 days, home at 5:30, saturday you will work all day plus a bit more to be home at about 6:15. sunday is yours ha! Evenings, visit with wife and do a couple pre meal honey do list items 5:30 to 6:00 mealtime 6:00 to 6:30 Wife handles dishes etc, so you help the kids with homework, read stories, tickle them piggy back rides etc. and help tuck in kids 6:30 to 8:00 Stop in and check out the web or unwind with TV 8:00 to 9:00 9:00 on, wife or airplane time LOL!!! I am not trying to cause trouble Fly Boy I just want to give some insight to what is in store for you. My "budget" is by no means cast in stone, and not everyone makes $35/hour. My point was to show you we all have challenges that can seem difficult, but it is these challenges that make life interesting. Seems lke every post I read of yours is down, Man you are 17!! you got the world by the balls!! ENJOY IT. You will not alway be able to afford to do what you want to do, you will sometimes have to make some sacrifices to do SOME of the things you want to do. ENJOY THE JOURNEY. You have some great building skills, no one can take that away and when you can scratch up some cash to buy some supplies I really hope you have fun building your creations. later Brian

Dude, the glass is half full. Wanna fly the best models in the world? Slow down on airplanes and speed up in school. You're 17 right? Bust your hump in school, leave airplanes alone for a bit. Not saying give the hobby up, just saying fly foam or the sim for a bit. A hobby isn't going to support your family, it takes time and money away from it. Modeling is a privelage not a right. Now take that frown and turn it up side down!! Hit the books, be a doctor, pay somebody to build all your stuff, buy 4 of everything and share your experience with others. NO MORE WAAAAA ALLOWED!! |

I completely agree with Biff. I'm 19 and I slowed down on airplanes. I started flying faomies though. They're cheap and you can get a ton of fun out of them. I still have regular glo planes, but I fly them on Sundays. Sunday is when I get to relax and have fun. I don't have a good job right now, but I do a lot around the house and exchange that for food/a bed/etc. Soon I will get my job and be off to enjoy it, but until then, I'm not able to fly the planes that I want, do all that I want to do, buy all that I need. When I get to where Green@ 3d wrote about, I will be able to budget my time/resources and have fun with it. Since I love designing planes, I might be able to pay for my hobby addiction. Also, I can fly excellent planes for little dough! (how much do you think it will cost to build a 56% Extra that I designed?) So, do anything to pay off your debt to your mom and stay out of the red. Look at your options for after high school and pursue that. If you love to build RC planes, you will have a great and successful carreer in anything that requires mechanical ability.(just something that I've found) Oh and once you are out of the red and have spending money, get a good sim with multiplay. I have G3 and when I'm in multiplayer, it's just like being at the flying field. G3 and FS One have options for multiplay and I think that they both should be good.(G3 is probably better though hehe) Sincerely, 50%

Dude you gotta slow the roll. Borrowing money for the hobby is a bad thing. Getting a loan for a car or school is the way to go. Too many guys spend far too much of their hard earned salary to support the modeling jones. If you don't have cash in pocket (after bills are payed) you don't have money for the hobby. It sucks,we all want the best stuff and there's no way to have enough airplanes. The hobby needs to be kept in perspective, it's a way to relax AFTER work, not something that can be all consuming if you're looking for a normal life. There's precious few folks who can do the hobby full time. Here's some news for you dude, those who do the hobby full time call it a JOB. Best ways to loose the hobby and have it own you; be in the hobby business or let it take priority of your life. You're 17 dude. The crappy town you live in will seem like heaven when you're 30 and living in "the exciting big city." Slow down bro. Get a good education or trade, buy a house, perhaps get married, THEN fly what you want. The way you're headed, the hobby will only cause you greif. Kinda like eating a good steak. We all love steak and can't get enough. Better to have it every once in a while and TRULY enjoy every bite, than gorge every day. It just wouldn't be the same. The reality is the hobby is like salt or pepper. Work and paying bills is the meat and potatos. Trust me dude, folks are looking out for you. When a site based on flying is telling you to slow the roll, there's something to it. |

| Yeah, i wanted a RC plane since first saw some guys flying at a sport field, that was when I was 10 years old. I had to wait 19 years before i could afford my first plane, was it worth the wait, hell yeah!

Biff couldnt make it any more clear. I'm 22 and gave the hobby a rest for 4 years when I went to school. Now I have a 4 year degree, and no one can take away from me. And most importantly my whole life to look forward too.

Yea, these guys no what they are talking about! I was just going over my finances and have decided to purchace my FIRST gasser. Only thing is it will be about 6 month before I do. First I will pay off my 2005 Saturn Ion Redline, its supercharged and will do 0-60 in 6.2 sec!!! It will barely be a year old when I pay it off. Then I will save to make sure I have plenty in the bank incase some sort of disaster happens. Then I will save enough to get my gasser. I have had the same 2 engines, servos, and radio for 8 years now and have only owned about 5 different airframes in that time. Having suffered through the pain of wanting more out of my planes but now that I own a house and a brand new sports car and soon my first gasser, and the only debt I will have is my house, all that suffering is totally worth it!!! I don't make an incredible amount of money, its all about managing the money, being patient, and working hard that has put me in such an incredible situation. Work hard, get an education, and be patient or you will never achieve your dreams!
