Default Not ready yet!

Hi guys!

Dropped a high into the "New to Giants" forum the other day and got pointed this way. I'm pretty new to the hobby and not been flying long but my aim is to get off the smaller stuff as soon as thumbs permit and GO BIG!!!!!!!!!.

I guess it's gonna be a while before I'm good enough but I have been so blown away by the site and the giant scale aerobatic scene I thought I would get some research in.

My first question is:- How do you make the transition from smaller scale models to giant scale??

Any advice/comments??

Welcome norton500 !!

I just started into the bigger gassers this year and am getting to enjoy it it more every flight.

The initial shock of the cost wears out after a while, which to me was the biggest part of the transition.

Other things to learn about the gassers will be radio setup, plane maintenance, safety etc. etc., other than that a plane is a plane to me, if you are flying smaller scale stuff well than flying a bigger plane is not that different.

Good Luck !

Fly a .40 glow sized 3D plane and get good on it. Then, this is where I changed my mind. I used to say transition through a 1.20 glow size and then into gas. The truth is, you will spend as much on the 1.20 glow plane as a 50cc bird in the long run. Glow fuel = 18.00 a gallon VS $ 5 with oil per gallon in gassers. The servos are the same. Get good on a .40 glow and go get a 50cc job! They are so easy to fly!

Yeah I also feel the same. I guess the size also scares people at first. It took me a little while to get over it. Now 40% dont seem that big and 28% seem like .40 size to me. Of course transporting the planes and getting them through the house can be fun.

Other than that, honesty the larger planes fly much more stable and can be as easy as a trainer when setup as such. Flip your rates and then they really shine.
Link up with some flyers who are into big planes and who also can really fly well.

The best investment will be the good gear such as radio, engine and servos. The planes are really the "cheap" part of the equation. Dont get cheap on the larger planes for safety and for performance. If you cant afford it all, then get things here and there or find some RTF used plane from someone you can trust or perhaps a mentor who is moving to larger planes.

The best advice anyone gave me for big planes was to skip 28% and go to 33-35%. If you can afford it then go for it! Just also remember everytime you fly your big plane it might take off in one piece and then come back down in about 10,000 pieces.

ZDZ 80, ZDZ Super 80, 3W-80 are all nice motors in that size range. The ZDZ Super 80 is supposed to be the real power house of that trio. I have the regular 80 and its a stump puller on my comp arf 2.6m extra. I have heard nothing but good reports on the 3w-80 as well.
