ok, Im about to get in to gassers, my question is: How do I calculate the wing loading that the plane should have to fly really good???? I´ve been reading the threads on the hangar 9 260, now I know all the pros and cons, but I will go with this plane because I dont have the money to buy the aeroworks 260, and also I have little space in my apartment. But for the future, when I will have money and will buy big bad ass airplanes I want to know how to calculate the wing loading!!Thanks!!! |

That H9 Extra 260 27% with a DA50 should give you all the vertical at 8700ft that you could want. I have the same plane with a FPE 40cc engine and it hovers here at 1000ft at 1/2 throttle. Sweet flying plane. Can't help you with wing loading. Don't intrest me much. But this bird weighs in a 14.3 lbs. Pretty light. Google search the H9 plane and on horizon's site they have a H9/DA50 combo video u can watch. |

If you're going to be flying at 8500' MSL, then maybe you need to consult Dick Hanson on RCUniverse. He scratch builts some very light airframes and then installs engines approximately one class larger, i.e. 150-160cc in 33-35% planes. I doubt at 8500' you will ever be able to obtain the same floating feeling with your airplane as is easy at sea level. I would say put a BME110X in the nose of a 30% Aviation Models Yak54, that should give you good power and keep it light. The H9 260 with a DA50 in the nose should be allright, maybe even better if you wait for the BME55X, but dang, 8500' MSL and possibly even high temperature and humidity, that's almost going to be like flying on the moon, except for the larger gravity here on Earth he he.

thanks guys, it is hard to fly at 8500 feet, but you get used to it, we always put bigger engines on planes, but you have to sacrifice weight and flotation of the plane, I was flying a Ucan do 60 with an os 1.60 on it....I saw that video on the horizon site, it looks fine, I will try to get the plane under 16 lbs, hope someone can tell me about the wing loading. thanks!! |

Wing loading is a very complex issue. Unless you compare different wing loadings on the exact same model, size, wing profile, you can't hardly draw any parellels. A 102" ws airplane can have a much higher wing loading than an 84" ws airplane, but wil float much better. A bipe with the same wing loading and same size as a mono wing will be completely different, because the area is split into two wings. As density altitude gets bigger, the polar curve for the specific wing moves right, meaning EVERYTHING happens at a higher velocity for a given weight or load. If you really want to be as sure as possible that you will be happy with your investment and its performance at 8500' MSL, you really should try and contact Dick Hanson through RCUniverse. Explain your situation to him, how much can you spend, etc. and see what he can suggest.
