Duralite Batteries and Triton Charger

Hello Everyone,

FYI, I ran some tests with my Duralite batteries and triton charger to see if triton would fully charge these batteries! Results show that Triton doesn't fully charge the Duralite plus batteries by 300-600 ma capacity. One shouldn't be concerned about over charging if they set up the charger right.

For best results Duralite batteries need to be charged with Duralite charger.

Also when checking the voltage of the pack, make sure to check them via the yellow lead and under 1AMP. The black lead doesn't show the voltage of the pack as accurate as it should be because of the reverse protecting diode in the black lead.
Stop flying at 7.0v when read under 1AMP load from the yellow lead.
I get 7-9 (10 min) flights from one 4000 mah on my QQ Yak 102" depending how I fly the plane.

Reza: When you connect the battery to the switch, you do it with the black lead right? the yellow is only for charging and taking voltage readings?
Won`t the reverse protecting diode be a problem when delivering the current to the servos?

Yes, the black one goes to switch and Yellow is for charging. No there won't be any problem delivering the current to the servos

How did you measure the difference ???

I first charged it with Triton, when Triton stopped the charge, I connected the battery to Duralite charger that puts out 400mah. Duralite charger light went on meaning the battery still is charging and stayed on for 1:30-2 hours. Since at the very end of charge Duralite charger will reduce the current and won't be .4 AMP anymore, I guessed 400-600 mah. At the end voltage of battery was 8.4-8.42 if I remember right and under load was 8.05 or so.

IC. That won't really give you any meaningful results, it's all just a guess as you point out.

I've had very good luck with Tritons over the years, that's why I was curious.

I'd do at least two charging cycles on both Duralite and Triton, discharging on a Triton (or any other charger that tells you the amount of mah drawn from the pack). The discharge numbers should give much better idea what is actually going on.

I used the triton to charge my Duralite TX pack without any issues. I imagine the the Duralite charger behaves the same way as well, brings the current up slow and down slow, so your estimates may be off more than you think. Perfect example, even if I set my Triton for 1c charge rate, the duralite pack and its charge safe circuitry would only allow the pack to charge at .4amps (If I remember correctly) and it would climb up to these charge rates over a period of time, and bring down the charge rate slowly as it approached peak.

Yes, I think the best way would be what Paffy mentioned fully charge with triton and discharge, then fully charge with Duralite and again discharge with Triton and read the capacity.

Reza, can the duralites be discharged with the accucycle elite? I know it is a good exercise for them to be discharged and charged again. I have the duralite charger, but besides keeping the plane`s servos on, I have no other means of discharging them. Can it be done?

Yes, John it can. Every month or so discharge them to 7.2-7.4 or so only if you are not flying your plane every once in a while otherwise you don't even need to discharge them. Also I would suggest a discharge rate of 0.5 or so.

i have a schulze charger the 6-530d and i tried discharging my pack via the black lead ... and it wouldtn commence as though there is some kind of cuircit there that prevents the charget from testing the battry ??? but it alows me to discharge through the yellow lead?

what is the problem ... ?
how can i discharge it ???
