Default Smoke pump location

Just curious where everyone is mounting there smoke pump in the 102" yak? I bought the showtime skywriter from TBM and I want to keep it simple and clean! Also I know that a 12v source is supposdly better to run the pump on but I have several 2 cell lipoly packs laying around. One is 1200mah which I believe would be plenty mah just want to find out why everyone recommends 12 volt on the pump? Is it required to put a switch between the battery and the pump or can I just plug the battery directly into the pump when I'm ready to smoke up the place?

Never installed smoke, looks simple just never done it.

I did a smoke how-to thread a while ago, installing also in a 102 inch Yak, pump and tank located inside the cannister tunnel. (I use standard mufflers, so the tunnel was empty) Hope this can help!

Thanks, Yeah I saw that a few days ago. I guess I just wanna keep everything up top accesible (personal preference) where I can remove it without removing the cowl. Reza gives good detail where to put the smoke tank in the gen2 manual. I am going there with the tank and was looking for a good place to put the pump. Should it be real close to the cg as well?

I just tried to keep the tank as close as possible to the CG every time. With the pump, I usually put it a little bit behind the tank. (I heard somewhere that this keeps the pump from losing it's prime or something like that, so that's why I run them behind the tank)

I have set up smoke in my Edge which is smaller than the Yak and is glow powered, tank on the CG and pump behind it. As long as the tank is on the CG and the airplane balances with your pump in the location that you want it to be, I think you will be fine.

Hi Anthony,

For an easy removable set up, position the tank the way I mentioned in the manual. For the actual smoke pump, you will have 2-3 options
1. Next to the smoke tank and wrap it to the side wall of smoke tank.

2. Depending on where you installed your RX battery, you can mount it right in front of the Tank/smoke tank where I show the RX battery mounted in the new manual.

3. or inside the firewall which I think would be a great spot for it.

You won't have that much CG problem if you remove your spinner when smoke tank is set up inside the firewall or just fly it on slightly nose heavy side. The pump itself is not heavy at all!

Sorry my plane is not set up for smoke, so I can't take any pics.

Let me know if I made any sense without pics to show.

A related question, I have a TME and it seems to lose prime half way through the tank of oil. If you turn it off and then try to re-engage it doen't start. Sometimes you can move the throttle to low idle and it will re-start. Any suggestions

I've always tried to keep everything in the cowl I can. Smoke fluid is nasty to clean up.

Ok I was going to mount my receiver batteries were you show yours except I have two 2400s. I was going to lay them beside each other but I guess I could stack the batteries and run the smoke pump besides them on one side or the other. This may work well. Thanks for the input. Maybe I will get this thing done soon so I can fly. I am about to die. (I have nothing to fly currently)!

Does the smoke pump require foam under it when mounting?

Anybody ever use diesel fuel for smoke oil? Read this on TBM site. Curious what the weight difference is.

Here are some pics of my smoke install in my 102. I use the powerbox smoke pump which works great on a 2 cell 730 thunder power pack.

Thanks for the pictures. Thats what i needed. I am glad to hear the 2 cell's work good for the smoke cause that's what I have. Is it necessary to put a switch on the pump or just install and plug in the lipoly pack before flight? The transmitter works as its switch on and off, correct?
