Can it fly or no? I think the best thing you can do is return it to the wild. I have 2 huge Umbrella Cockatoo's. One is wild caught, the other is domestically raised. The more it is hand fed and raised, the less it can survive in the wild. If you want to keep it as a pet, like my wife and I have done, think about it. It is selfish to cage a bird period. We got these because they were being abused. You can contact the humane society and ask them what to do do about it. They carry lice and other diseases, so wash yourself carefully. Good luck, let us know the ins and outs of what you plan to do!

I usually check all linkages after every flying session while I clean the plane and get rid of the castor goo. Then I drain the fuel out of the tank and turn the engine over a few times to get rid of the oil in the muffler. Oh WAIT...wrong birds. Seriously though can you feed it anything? We had a finch (domestic) that we had to hand feed after it got hurt. It is extremely difficult to keep them alive that way though. Will he eat anything? I'd keep it in the shade and not let it get too hot. It's ~100 here. |

the bird can fly, just not very well. he was too young to pic food off the ground, so we hand fed him for the first few days. then he started eating off the ground, and growing more tail feathers. honestly, i really feel, and so do my parents, that the bird needs to be a little healthery before he goes in the wild. there are a lot of cats near by and i want to make sure he can fly out of danger. GremlinX, the bird has a big cage and is usually open so he can come out and walk around, and we wont be keeping him as a pet. he is a wild animal and deserves to be in the wild. im just keeping him until he can fly better and knows how to eat off the ground and stuff like that. Shortbus, that's some of the best advice right there .

Deadstick: He doesn't look injured to me, and hand trained? Maybe someone had him nearly tamed at a home bird feeder. Even injured birds won't jump on your finger. The key, to me anyway, seems to keep him fed and warm. The bird rescue places have this semi-liquid high sugar/calorie stuff in a tube that they use with injured birds. If he's near tamed, and not sick, regular store-bought seed ought to do him. I agree with others about keeping a wild bird captive. No access to mates etc. But this guy really seems already tamed???? Maybe he's a new fledge, or not more than a couple months old? I sound like I know what I'm talking about, but I'm a neuroscience researcher. We used pigeons sometimes....... Let us know how he does. I was really surprised myself wen he hoped on my hand. right now i think the main is flying, he needs to grow more tail feathers. he doesnt have enough to steer properly. and we can tell hes very young because he still has his baby feathers. ill keep everyone posted on how he's doing..
