Default What'z Up?!

Just getting seriously into 3D. I love tearing holes in the air! Been modeling all my life and finally got into RC the past 1-1/2 years. Took me about 3 smaller 3D planes to realize that larger is better! Just got finished with a Funtana X 50 e-powered and have a CA Models Zafiro 3D(also e-powered) on the bench. I think a Chip Hyde Tunnel Vision is next on the to do list. Really enjoy watching the Pro's throw a 40 percenter thru it's paces. I'll get there one of these days but am enjoying progressing up the 3D ladder. It still blows my mind that some of the older glow guys haven't really seen what a 3D plane can do or really know what it's all about. Went to a local AMA field to check it out and the only planes there were sport flyers and warbirds, not one 3D plane. And he asked where my muffler was and when I said it was electric, he said " Electrics are underpowered and dangerous" till I turned on the juice and he relented to let me qualify. When they asked me to fly the usual 4 takeoff and landings I kind of forgot, and did my usual takeoff, a sort of KE hover and about gave the poor guy a heart attack! He kept screaming that I'd stalled it out and was going to crash! I snapped out of it and did the boring racetrack/landing 4 times and when I put it down, l asked if he'd ever seen 3D plane and he said" What the h### is 3D?!" Needless to say I didn't feel very welcome when I asked what the best corner of the field was to hover in! Got the usual comments about how a plane is not a chopper and why would I want to flail a perfectly good plane thru the air? Needless to say I wasn't asked to join the club. But as Groucho put it" I wouldn't want to be part of any club that would have me!" Not that I have anything against glow planes as that is all I'm used to flying, but once I got zapped by the electrical bug, it's hard to go back. Not to mention my wife can't stand the smell of nitro! She doesn't have a problem with my planes as long as they don't stink up the house and get oil all over the place. Glad to find a wild bunch that I can look up too! Thanks for having me. Here's pics of some of my junk.
Sincerely,
Jason Thornton

Hey Jason,

Great to have you here!!

Like 50 said, this is the place to have some fun without the drama of some of the other sites!! We like everything that flies, take what you have, fly it hard and have a ball, that's all there is to it!!

We have some of the older guys at out field that have a problem with 3D, but most of them see it done right and want to know more, now that's sweet!!!

Welcome to the Giants!!!

Using a Hacker A50/16L outrunner/Jeti 77 opto/8s2p /TP 2100's. Having trouble finding suitable landing gear to accomodate 18-20" props. Working on that though. Should be a fun project.

Thanks for the welcome! Feel like I'm home already, my kind of people. I just got a Dick Rankin "Proud Bird" 47" foamie that I'm going to put some SFG's on. I saw Blucorbasher's video(RCGroups.com) with the SFG's on his and was hooked. Love big even if it's not balsa/composite! I love to see a plane pushed to it's limits(or pilots limits), that's what they're made for right?! I don't have any hanger queens, mine are meant to thrash. Keep up the good work everybody!
Regards,
Jason

Yeah, it's funny that as soon as they see some cool moves and flying skills(not from me of course) that usually changes their mind. I had a funny experience at another local field, a fellow had a Hanger 9 P-47 with a 1.40 Saito in it and he just thought he was the cat's meow. The only cool move he did was a roll! When he saw me going thru some hovering, torque rolls, etc. he though he would upstage me with a low slow pass(boring!) and a gust flipped him almost all the way over, he didn't know how to get out of it and pulled back and hit the throttle. Needless to say he "rekitted" the plane. He said he just couldn't understand what happened and we told him he should have rolled it all the way inverted and given it some down elevator and throttle till he got into a better position to roll back over. I said "if you flew some 3D planes you would know how to work out of a bad spot". My point being that you don't learn anything by flying racetracks! The next week he was flying a 3D foamie trying to improve his thumbs! Point taken. Thanks for the welcome!
Regards,
Jason

Yeah I know what you mean! I quess the lesson is not who dies with the most toys, but who has the most fun with their toys! I've seen about 5-6 planes lost due to failed glow plugs(why do they wait to fail when you're hovering a few feet off the ground?) and wrecked 2 myself due to inflight engine failures. After the last wreck, I promised myself to really apply my money towards electrics and have been much happier(poorer). Like everything else, you get what you pay for. Thanks for the welcome!
Regards,
Jason
